Categorizing the Brethren

Post by steve-in-kville »

Since everyone else is getting in on the fun...

Brethren in Christ (BIC)
Current Church of the Brethren (COB)
Former COB (basically independent at the moment)
Biblical Brethren Fellowship
Dunkard Brethren
Various Dunkard Brethren splinter groups (Millback, Freystown, etc)
Various half-way in betweens (Little Kutztown followed by a bunch I've forgotten about)
Bible Brethren
Then there are River Brethren and German Baptist, Depending on the wind direction, they may or may not affiliate themselves in the Brethren fold.

There are also Old Brethren which are essentially similar to Old German Baptist Brethren - New Conference.

The term Old Brethren has a few different meanings, depending. Some may lump everything from the Bible Brethren on down as "old Brethren." And then there is the reference you gave.

Is "Plymouth Brethren" an alternate name for one of the groups included in this list?

To my immediate understanding, they are something else entirely.

Since you mentioned COB, there is a large exodus of congregations leaving them. They are joining Covenant Brethren Church which emphasises fidelity to Biblical teachings.

Not everyone is. Most are remaining independent... for now ;)

There’s also the Brethren Church and the Grace Brethren.

Google tells me that the Grace Brethren are now known as Charis Fellowship.
