Both of them are spending other people's money and affecting other people's lives.

Tesla has bled about $850 BILLION of market cap in the past year due in part to Musk's antics. That is mostly other people's money. I would not have wanted to have my retirement invested in Tesla and see it bleed 70% of it value in 2022. That is worse than bitcoin.

“Market cap” is not money and never was. If you owned a share of Tesla, you still own it now.

Twitter has nothing to do with Tesla. Electric cars are looking to not work very well as this recent winter storm has proven - particularly with high electrical prices and blackouts. Tesla is still by far the best EV on the market.

For comparison, GM went utterly bankrupt not that long ago.

No.
Because of citizenship, it was discussed a bit in this thread Dec 6/early December.
i was curious about response to the video. (which was a bit quirky but interesting, too.)
i like the idea of non-career politicians serving in leadership.

Also, the part about Musk being African-American. :P

That's like saying the Federal deficit is not real money.

Tesla was hugely overvalued due to the cult of Elon. His antics with Twitter have severely tarnished that cult attraction. Going all right-wing Republican in public was also a bad marketing strategy for Tesla since the bulk of their market is in blue areas of the country. And a lot of people are deciding that they don't really want a $50K yard sign sitting in their driveway at home and in the parking lot work that says "Look at me, I'm an Elon fanboy."

Market cap is not real money. You can’t spend it and it fluctuates up and down every single day.

I was unaware that people bought Teslas solely as a political statement…. but then again I’ve always thought EV owners were rather stupid people.

I am looking forward to the day I can get an EV. It is getting closer, but not yet. I can not afford it yet. I need to be able to get a used vehicle with 100,000+ miles that still has another 100,000 miles in it. EVs are getting closer, but not there yet. I also need to buy it for cheap.

Tesla has not produced a minivan yet. It will be hard for me to buy anything besides a minivan. I need the carry capacity. Maybe that will change in 5 years and I can go with a smaller unit. Cybertruck just does not speak to me.

This is my gripe: why are there very few to no available EVs in the 7 passenger market? Rivian has a SUV coming out but it’s still very early stages and very few in the hands of consumers. There’s a few crossover styles available with maybe a squashed third row seat. I’ll probably drive our minivan til it’s dead, which could be another 100k, and I’m not looking for a new vehicle now, but part of that is there’s nothing that interests me in the larger EV lineup. If there was a 7 passenger EV with towing capabilities that was under 50k then I’d start planning.

I would enjoy owning an EV, but a few things have to happen. They have to get cheaper. They have to have service centers near me. We need more charging stations everywhere.

People don't. There are a lot of ordinary EVs out there, most are just ordinary cars.

What Elon is doing is turning the ordinary purchase and ownership of a Tesla into a political statement since people now link Tesla to Elon's right-wing political views.
