1. It isn’t happening.
2. It is happening, and it’s not a big deal.
3. It is happening, and it’s wonderful.
4. It is happening, and you’re a bad person if you oppose it.

You can replace “happening” with “gay marriage”, for example.

Apparently the news references to secrecy was in response to the Superintendent and a few members of the school board coming up with a list of 130 books to censor in violation of state open meeting laws and district policy that require such decisions get made in public with public comment. In other words they came up with their banned books list in secret and the superintendent implemented it on his own. People had to sue to even get the list of books they removed. The district's actual book selection committee reviewed all 130 books and found that only 5 of them met their criteria for possible removal. Nearly half had nothing to do with LGBT or trans issues but were targeted because they addressed topics like racism or diversity. And that is when conservative members actually called the police on those on the district's textbook review board that they disagreed with.
Who had to sue to get the list of books? How do you know this. NBC News doesn't seem to think they had to.

I'm curious - are the decisions to add books to the school library also subject to open meeting laws, or just decisions to remove books?
I'm not the world expert on this event. I was just responding to GaryK who posted it. Some googling brought up Twitter posts by local activists who have filed various open-records complaints with the state and, as of then had still not gotten any official response from the district but had gotten leaked lists which were passed around Twitter.

Generally speaking any group decision-making that any district does is subject to open-meeting laws. That doesn't necessarily mean every part of the process happens in open meetings. But the actual decisions are supposed to be. So, for example, a committee of teachers might review new textbooks for science and forward their recommended choice to the board which will review and approve/disapprove that recommendation at an open meeting in which that agenda item was noticed to the public and the public is free to come comment. A lot of agenda items don't generate much if any public comment. The only things school boards are allowed to do behind closed doors in executive session are certain things like personnel decisions.
Are you saying it's your opinion that the decision about which books to add to the library has to happen in a public board meeting?

5. i googled, quickly checked the AP (and 20 identical msm reports) - thus proving (all above).

In our schools, proofreaders review new books for the library. If lots of other schools’ readers approved a book, it might just automatically get approved to go in.

We certainly would not appreciate the federal government and the ACLU telling us we have to have pornographic books on our school library shelves, accessible by first graders.

public or private, school libraries are for school students, not the general public.
local parents, taxpayers, voters have vested interest in contents.

i do NOT agree that when schools choose books to be included or excluded this amounts to “banning books.”
that’s the common HYPERBOLE in the prevailing lib script - wrong, useless, damaging.

some students will seek out illegal drugs+alcohol. this does not mean alcohol should be served in school cafeterias.
terrible math.

schools and teachers should model and promote high goals+ideals, esp for students who may not see this in their homes or on streets.
teachers should not be in competition to prove how cool they are, how much slang they can throw out, how low they can go.

as a shy child coming out of poverty and a lot of roughness, i counted on my teachers to model what i could hope for.
not to mirror and elevate where i was coming from. that would have been tragic.

lots of people express similar.
Dr Ben Carson and Dr Thomas Sowell are two contemporary examples OF MANY over time - since schools began. “aim high.”

This needs to be criminalized with prison sentences.
Teaching children to sneak and lie, esp to parents/guardians, should be criminalized. That’s BEFORE discussion of gender-anything.
The foundation is evil.

A new academic report on efforts to integrate Marine Corps boot camp recommends dropping gender-specific salutations for drill instructors, but service leaders are not convinced they want to take that step.

“The Army, Navy, and Coast Guard effectively de-emphasize gender in an integrated environment,” the report states. “Instead of saying ‘ma’am’ or ‘sir,’ recruits in these Services refer to their drill instructors using their ranks or roles followed by their last names. Gendered identifiers prime recruits to think about or visually search for a drill instructor’s gender first, before their rank or role.”

On the bright side, surely this means all the world’s important and hard problems must be resolved, right?!

Let me get this straight. The claim here (and in right-wing media) is that there is a vast conspiracy out there to "groom" and force school kids into an LGBT life against their will. And the evidence presented so far (at least in the last 10 or so pages of postings here) is the following:
  • a page or two of factual information in a yet to be published book in a 19-book series for middle school girls.
  • one example (out of the over 100,000 public schools in the country) of a counselor providing a bandage to a student so she can wrap her breasts. Not medication mind you, but the equivalent of an ace bandage that any kid could actually acquire at any drug store for a buck or two.
  • one example of the Department of Education Office of Civil Rights opening an investigation into a school district for censorship in response to a formal complaint. When in fact that same office routinely receives thousands of complaints and conducts thousands of investigations related to sexual, racial, and disability-related discrimination every year.
Is that it? Is that your evidence of a vast national conspiracy to "groom" kids into an LGBT life against their will? Did I miss something?

Oh wait...I forgot about the completely fake and malicious story circulated in conservative media and by conservative politicians (and repeated here) about schools putting out litter boxes for their furry-identifying students. I guess we should include that one too.
