This position fascinates me.
Am I to deduct from this that before sitting down with someone in a setting where you don't know everyone (wedding, funeral, birthday party etc) to eat, that you will vet everyone's personal opinion on puberty blockers?

I'm not convinced that Jesus didn't sit down with some sinners a time or two. Just curious how one arrives there, if you care to elaborate.
i’m not nett, he can well represent himself, but, altho this is not a position i’ve really found myself in,
i understand he would not want to KNOWINGLY sit down with unrepentant sinners? altho i’ve never taken this formal scriptural stance, i avoid situations that would put me in “bad company.” which i believe is similar, if not from the same spirit.

on the other hand, there are times when “sitting with sinners” would make sense and be occasion to witness, quietly or openly.

different people have different gifts of communication. the Holy Spirit uses all.

(i believe) the Holy Spirit determines outcomes. thus, a quiet witness can have profound outcomes! and, outcomes are not always known, in the moment or in the long term. so much that happens is beyond our understanding or knowing.

i hope nett sees this and responds. this is just my takeaway on it.

QuietlyListening wrote: ↑Fri Dec 16, 2022 7:44 pm Maybe less finger pointing when answering a post. if you mention someone's name do you have to be negative when speaking about that person? You can give your answer, your thoughts, answer their questions or respond and yet not be pointing fingers, even put labels on a person. Whether you believe someone fits the label - using one can create hostility or hard feelings. It may not be easy but labels don't need to be used and pointed responses need to be thought about many times before you post- think 4, 5, 6 times maybe more when posting if you are going to be personally negative.
And in Colossians 4:6 it says-Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
You may never change the person's mind but let's face it, people rarely change their minds from posts here.

Also- again in Colossians- 3:17a- And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus. . .

We have no idea what is in a person's heart. God only is the judge and we would be careful to remember that.
Instead of a not so nice, unkind or labeling response- respond with grace and then go quietly and pray for the person you have issue with.

It just seems people on all sides of all the issues are so quick to read and label and give responses that almost attack and we need to step back and maybe just not post that response.
I'm not in fellowship with people who claim to be Christians but support distressed children being put on puberty blockers. I wouldn't eat at the same table as that person

No, obviously not. But when someone has a violent verbal reaction to simple statements about protecting children, I can safely make that determination.

Someone who claims to be a Mennonite and an ordained pastor who nonetheless promotes grievous sexual sin is someone I think no sincere believer should accept as being in “fellowship” with; such a person knows the truth yet has rejected it.

That makes sense. I may have misread the intent in the earlier statement.
I'd be uncomfortable communing with people of the pursuasion you mentioned. Whether they claim to be Christian or not means very little at that point.

But sitting down over a meal or coffee to graciously discuss one's differences would not seem like a conflict of conscience for me.
I think Robert is right when he says these things are not best handled on an open internet forum. It's so hard to see facial expressions and hear the tone of voice.

Another challenge is many from a more conservative Mennonite/Anabaptist foundation already separate themselves from others that do not see things as they do. It is easy to project that into this forum because it is populated with a lot of cMs. The challenge is that it is not limited to cM discussion. It is open to all people that are respectful and are sincerely seeking a place to connect in a small way with others that are interested in a similar faith. Yet, that faith is often practiced in a very different way.

It is okay of nett does not want to "fellowship" with others he perceives as too tolerant with gender issues. This would mean he would have to limit or not come to MN to post since this forum always has and will continue to allow differing voices on issues as long as it is respectful.

What often happens is those whoa re more conservative do not want those voices and fight to remove/limit them from a space already set up to allow them. Both camps start building walls and allies to increase the fight/pressure. This shuts down discussion and open honest expression. Then these factions start going at each other, often in passive aggressive ways. Then it falls to the Moderators to parent adults.

Try hard not to offend. Try harder not to be offended.
I think I am funnier than I really am.

i see all of this. with one more observation/thought. (none of this is “new.”)
where ever they come from, the majority of new members arrive interested in cMs. most quite optimistic and hopeful.
if initial forum entry posts are looked at, most active posters arrived interested in cMs, or conservative Anabaptists.

yet, most new members do not post beyond their entry post, many post once, or under 10 times, then disappear.
(i have no idea if admin/mods can see who is reading-only, or reading without signing in.)

in the past, on MD, it was fairly clear, many would read-only.
originally, the forum was cMs, not restricted to cMs, members began on CENTRALLY LOCATED FAMILY DESK TOP COMPUTERS.
(it was great!) i wasn’t original, but i joined before the family computer aspect changed.

today, there are active posters who not only do not have an interest in cMs, they have axes to grind, or criticisms.
of course that colors tone. :? questions are good! even honest criticisms. they’re vital to have an active forum.
snide jabs, sweeping criticisms, are hard to take. even for outsiders looking in.

i miss the interested tone of response to those arriving with fresh questions about conservative Anabaptism, esp how it might offer approaches to life+faith not commonly found in the world, not in other schools or churches - many long for “better” than the (gov as god) world is presenting. often, gov as god is offered IN churches!

some would arrive with specific personal questions they wanted CM help with. (one i recall was a woman whose husband refused to go to church with the family.) she got a lot of encouraging feedback about how she might respond to it. i recall that one, because there was unusual unanimity in suggestions! i believe she may have found encouraging, helpful, practical help. (that was not unusual.) lots of new members received personal response, maybe quite a lot privately? MD was a place where lots found personal and practical response. It makes sense that lots of folks arrive with “something weighing on their minds.”

one more (not new) thing. :)
i’ve wondered if the former MD way of inviting new members to share an Introduction thread to (say anything they want about themselves) would help get more new members engaged? i.e., a thread open for discussion with existing members?

(i imagine) it might be daunting to enter, only to get the idea the forum is .. not cM-inhabited, not welcoming to new members?
maybe an open Intro thread or personal invitation to discuss would help new folks get started?

Mrs. Nisly has an Intro thread (not used enough!) :blah:
http://forum.mennonet.com/viewtopic.php ... p=207#p207

of course i realize i’m part of the problem.
i appreciate the long-suffering involved.

Just stumbled on this 2016 topic, good cM (and others’) content related to personal interactions:

“Query: Submission to the weaker brother?”

Ernie wrote:The other passage to reference is Romans 14.
In this chapter Paul I would understand Paul to be saying that no one should eat pork around a Christian who doesn't eat pork due to OT law. (Am I understanding correctly anyone?)
Another possibility would be that he was referring to meat offered to idols.
I tend to think of Romans 14 as complementary with 1 Corinthians 8, where Paul tells the Corinthians that yes, we know that idols really are nothing - they are just bits of stone or wood covered with silver or gold. As such, there is really no inherent harm in eating meat that has been offered to idols (tell that to the people that think we can become demon possessed by using essential oils).
In fact, as far as that goes, those of us who aren't tempted to idol worship in that way could eat a meal in the idol temple without being affected. But knowing the damage it would do to our testimony among those who do believe in idol powers, and the increased temptations it would place in front of those already struggling with temptations to go back to the idol temples, the rest of us should stay out.
This might be a bad illustration, but for an example lets think about shopping at Bass Pro Shops.
I am not much of a hunter or a fisherman. If I need to pick up some shotgun shells for varmint control, it makes no difference to me whether I pick them up at Walmart or Bass Pro. But if someone faces strong temptations to idolize hunting or fishing, Bass Pro might be a dangerous place to shop. I would be violating the principle of 1 Corinthians 8 were I to take such a brother shopping at a place that tempts him, or give him a gift card to such a place. Some churches in our area discourage their young men from shopping at Cabelas, and I respect that.
I think it's a way of putting the submission to a weaker brother concept into shoe leather.
I understand what you're saying.
But I've seen these passages used by people who are trying to coerce other people in the church to go along with their thinking.
They can argue pretty strongly from the weaker brother perspective, though it's pretty evident that I'm actually the weaker brother because I don't see certain dangers.

How far should a person allow himself to be pushed?

This has nothing to do with conservative vs liberal values. Some thing are absolute, as in Christ or Satan.

The mennonite faith is not and never will be practiced in support puberty blockers for confused children. This is not a matter of different values. This is a matter of an extremely destructive evil agenda attempting to worm its way into the mennonites. Just like the Pink Mennos years ago with MCUSA.

It's not about having a good faith discussions (obviously, hence the latin and Anglo Saxon), it's purely about subversive, evil ideology demands a voice and a platform.

(i hope) the forum doesn’t become a “safe” place for lib views to enjoy a field day, while conservatives are sent to hidden view,
expected to resort to the Foe option, etc. That’s what the world wants, for sure!

At least in this one place, it would be great if cMs have a place to share their understandings, faith, personal views, without being labeled hateful. Without having to defend their views. Perhaps to have a place to freely explain their views. To share Truth.

The world is filled with online options for libs, even lib Mennos, they have “virtually” no tech restrictions.
One “plain”-ish corner for conservatives to (not restrict/ban others) but to be welcome+tolerated without defense does not seem like asking too much.

Most arrive wanting to learn more about cMs. The world has everything else covered!

For myself, i was surprised 10 years ago trolls and haters had not shut MD down. i credited the “plain” nature of the forum for not being overly attractive to those who already have so much. They have the world.

MD/MN are about reading and writing, centered in faith, not exactly the most popular of passtimes. :P

(i hope) the notion of quoting scriptures as being equilvalent to hate speech is soundly rejected.
(i hope) doors are open to seek better+deeper understanding of what those inspired, life-giving words mean.
