Ken wrote: ↑Tue Nov 22, 2022 3:55 pm Twitter is a private company and for-profit business. The product they are actually selling is YOU and all the other users of the site. They are selling YOUR eyeballs and YOUR data to advertisers.

They are under zero obligation to open their servers to anyone who wants to post information that violates their terms of service.

Just like, for example, FOX news isn't obligated to open up a 30 minute prime-time spot for me to show slides of my last family vacation or YouTube videos of my daughter's birthday party.

None of this actually has anything to do with First Amendment rights to freedom of speech.
It's quite a new phenomenon that liberals like you are promoting corporate abuse of power. I miss the old liberals who opposed war and opposed corporate abuse.

Anyway, it is Section 230 that enabled the current abuse of power. Without Section 230, Twitter would have to choose between being a platform or a publisher. If they are a publisher, then they could regulate content but would be liable for content. To avoid being liable, they would have to be a platform in which case they couldn't regulate legal speech. That is how the phone works. The phone companies can't disconnect phone calls with content they don't like just because they are private companies, and that is because they have declared themselves to be platforms to avoid liability for the content of phone calls.
And if the social media giants would be platforms, would they then not be able to regulate any content? What about death threats, child porn, live mass shootings, livestreams of suicide?

Actually I didn't say anything about the first amendment, I just said that Elon Musk doesn't support free speech at Twitter. And while Section 230 violates the spirit of the first amendment, it doesn't violate the first amendment directly. So I assume that where we actually disagree is that I support the idea of free speech in general, and you don't.
If you don’t like Twitter’s terms of service you can go to Gab, Telegram, Parler, Mastedon, Substack, or any of dozens of web publishing portals.
Of course all of these are horrible because they are all the product of modern culture. And since I don't like them, I am currently developing my own free speech platform.
Where you are mistaken is that you think Twitter is about free speech. It isn't.

Twitter is about driving users to Twitter where all those eyeballs can be monetized, and where they will provide "free" content that attracts still others.
And whatever degree of corporate content "moderation" is necessary in order to maximize views and users is what Twitter is going to do. Nothing less and nothing more.

As platforms, they could only remove illegal content. However they could rate content and let users filter content by rating which would solve the problem of content in bad taste.

Reports are that Twitter has been focused on removing child abuse material which previously was ignored and allowed to stay up. This seems very important and also raises questions of why the prior liberal executives in twitter tolerated it.

“Elon Musk to expose Twitter's Hunter Biden story cover-up” / 8min

Description:
Elon Musk says it is “necessary” to publicise all internal discussions surrounding Twitter’s decision to censor the New York Post’s original Hunter Biden laptop story ahead of the 2020 election.

They begin with TDS then apply the formula “liberally.”

hillary loathed the Jim Comey report/interview, she put much blame on him for her 2016 LOSS (altho, good grief, how much easier could he have been on her)?! .. following 2016, it appears, her party took a deep dive into partisan censorship in all forms of media - including social media. (election tampering) so severe, in my view, the election process is seriously eroded.

SAM HARRIS sums it up so well. he’s hard to expand upon. (keep talking, Sam. don’t hold back.)

“More Revelations Coming on Jeffrey Epstein’s Powerful Pals in Soon-Unsealed Docs”
.. U.S. District Judge ruled that another tranche of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein’s sex-trafficking ring will soon be made public.
https://www.thedailybeast.com/jeffrey-e ... ealed-docs
The latest records to be revealed, according to the Daily Mail, will include materials related to eight people including
Thomas Pritzker, the billionaire executive chairman of Hyatt Hotels who is listed in Epstein’s little black book of contacts,
a former personal assistant to Maxwell named Emmy Tayler, and Sarah Ransome, a survivor of Epstein’s abuse.

Preska, however, didn’t set a date for the release of the documents.

While Pritzker had argued disclosure of the record could damage his reputation, Preska overruled his objections.
In previously unsealed court records, Giuffre claimed Epstein and Maxwell forced her to have sex with wealthy, high-profile men including Pritzker, Britain’s Prince Andrew, former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, and billionaire hedge-fund manager Glenn Dubin. (All of the men denied Giuffre’s accusations.)

During Friday’s hearing, Preska indicated that a majority of the “purportedly sensitive information” related to the parties, who are identified only as “Does” on the court docket, has already come to light during Maxwell’s 2021 trial for sex trafficking. .. ..
