Please read this completely uncritical, rather fawning obituary:
https://anabaptistworld.org/former-s-d- ... t-classes/

To make myself clear: I completely understand - and for a part share - the misgivings of conservative Mennonites against voting for a politician and working as a politician.
But I emphasize that those misgivings are often exploited and misused by dishonest leftist propaganda - Leftists posing as if they would share those misgivings. In reality Leftists have problems only as long as the Mennonite candidate is a Republican (like Mastriano).
This kind of dishonesty/double standards is an endemic problem of MC USA because the mass of the colleges, and that means the mass of the professional clergy, is involved in it.
And the only solution will be, on the long run, de-professionalizing the churches and returning to a church of the laymen (or laics).

Correct.
Your example couldn’t make it more clear, esp at this time (Mastriano, R, PA).

It reflects the spectrum of Anabaptist beliefs: from those who vote everytime, to those who always abstain.
The phenom serves Dems well - on earth.

obama+hills summed it up nicely when they declared Christians and the Bible are “all fine+good” - as long as they concur with the Dem political agenda, not vice versa. i believe they live their faith!-their deep faith in partisan politics.

Possibly the most disturbing aspect of the divide is, lack of awareness/self-awareness on the part of Dem voters.

What are you talking about? This guy was interim governor of South Dakota for 5 months nearly 50 years ago but didn't actually run for governor. He was also an army vet so most certainly not a typical Mennonite from that time and he was Mennonite Brethren not MCUSA which didn't exist back then anyway. What about the obit do you think was fawning and what "critical" information do you think they are hiding?

In any event, I would suggest that Mennonites in PA voted overwhelmingly for Mastriano. The most heavily Mennonite county in PA in terms of percentage of population is probably Mifflin County (Belleville area). Looking at the election returns, Mastriano won Mifflin County by an overwhelming 38 percentage points. He also won Lancaster County. So he almost certainly received a substantial majority of the Anabaptist vote in PA.

Anabaptists are a diverse bunch. What is this hypocrisy or double standard of which you speak? It isn't liberal Anabaptists who argue that Mennonites shouldn't vote or run for office. It is conservative Anabaptists who make that argument.

Liberal Anabaptists have spilled lots of ink in Anabaptist World griping about how Mastriano shouldn’t be running for office.

Can you show us an example of this ink that was spilled?

I expect it is not surprising that liberals would oppose voting for him since he was a notorious election denier and Trump supporter. But that he shouldn't be running for office on Anabaptist grounds? I don't think he ever even claimed to be Anabaptist.

I suppose it’s only appropriate that a political thread on the mixing of Anabaptism and politics has somehow escaped the Politics forum and mixed itself into the Anabaptist Theology and Practice forum.

Lately it’s been pretty bad… it’s election time and my current patient has a relative who ran and won. You can only guess how bad the last week has been with so much vitriol over the opponent

My first reaction to the op was similar... How does this topic, according to the title, have anything to do with Anabaptist theology or practice? I doubt either candidate is sympathetic to Anabaptist distinctives...
Although I will say that from my personal experience, people like Mastriano... charismatic-y-dominionist-God&country types with loose or past connections to Menno/Anabaptism are the Most hostile towards Anabaptist distinctives - in fact generally much more hostile than non-Christians or people of other faiths.

Well…I think that kind of bird is a much less hostile threat to us on the west coast than the hostile far left sort.
