In the Dunkard church, we used to use a common drinking glass for water at Lovefeast (you shared with the person across from you). When the swine flu was a huge concern, they switched to individual glasses for water. We also passed around the bread and broke a piece off for the brother next to you. I think in the Mennonite circles, the bishop breaks it off for you. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Current fellowship, we have individual cups that are basically plastic "shot glasses" of grape juice.

I really don't like the practice of the bishop (or it might be the deacon, I forget) breaking bread for everybody.

Jesus was able to drink from one cup with his disciples, and he then washed their feet; I question why we think we're somehow better than Jesus and his disciples.

Yes and there were no women attending, getting communion or foot washing either.
I question why the exactness of the form matters if we already have changed it.

Why do you think the women leave the auditorium when the men wash feet?

It was also an actual meal. I expect most churches don't do communion around the table as part of a dinner meal.

There could be several reasons but it was not because Jesus sent them off to wash their own feet.

I understand that feet washing was a custom back in that era and place. Did each person wash their own feet? Did people ever wash other peoples feet? If so, did men wash womens feet and vice versa? Or did custom dictate that only people of the same sex was feet, or perhaps only people of the opposite sex wash feet?

I don't think it matters whether or not there is protection. Both communion and the washing of feet are demonstrations of love and care within the Christian community. And love is worth the risks that are involved in displaying it.

Steve, you want to handle this one or should we let it for Heirbyadoption?
