Virginia lawmakers: if you don’t help your child get a sex change, you’ll get arrested by CPS.

Virginia lawmakers: if you don’t help your child get a sex change, you’ll get arrested by CPS.

ASHBURN, Va. (WJLA) — Virginia parents could face a felony or misdemeanor charge if they do not affirm their child’s sexual orientation and gender identity, according to a state lawmaker with plans to introduce the legislation in Virginia's upcoming legislative session.
And how will this be enforced? Via schools and “mandatory reporters”, of course.
“If the child shares with those mandated reporters, what they are going through, we are talking about not only physical abuse or mental abuse, what the job of that mandated reporter is to inform Child Protective Services (CPS),” Guzman told 7News.
Note that this defined anything other than enthusiastically promoting homosexuality and transsexual as “abuse”. And the goal here is to get you banned from employment:
“What could the penalties be if the investigation concludes that a parent is not affirming of their LGBTQ child? What could the consequences be?” 7News Reporter Nick Minock asked Guzman on Thursday.

“Well, we first have to complete an investigation,” Guzman answered. “It could be a felony, it could be a misdemeanor, but we know that CPS charge could harm your employment, could harm their education, because nowadays many people do a CPS database search before offering employment.”
What about religious people?
“I've been asked that question by knocking on doors,” Guzman answered. “The Bible says to accept everyone for who they are. So that's what I tell them when they asked me that question, and that's what I will continue to tell people. You know, we all have a commitment to God. And for those believers out there, we know that there's life after life, and there is going to be a conversation between that person and God and that's what we're after --- to go by what the Bible says. It is not my job to judge anyone. It is my job to help people.”

“I think that it’s extremely important that we show that as a community we are ready to accept each other for who they are and whom they love,” Guzman told 7News. “And this is not a bill that will agitate parents because we haven’t seen any parents to come against it.”
Jahertz hypothesises that any potential church members should first pass a criminal background check before they can be admitted as church members.

One wonders what should be done with someone found guilty or arrested under a law such as this, who has a “CPS charge” for the crime of not affirming their child getting a sex change or being a homosexual.

OK, let's quote:
If a person with a Tier 3 child molestation record comes to a church for membership, the first, minimum indicator of genuine repentance every church should look for is complete openness and clarity about his or her record, plus a welcoming and compliant attitude toward any and all accountability measures, no matter how restrictive, that the church sees fit to require for the protection of its children. The discovery at any point that the applicant has been less than forthright about his or her criminal history should be a one-strike deal-breaker, as should any attempt to circumvent agreed-to restrictions, especially regarding access to children. No one's hurt feelings are worth gambling with the souls of the innocent.

If a church does not understand how to recognize the fruits of genuine repentance with a high degree of confidence, backed by a proven history of accuracy, that church is dysfunctional and has no business admitting new "converts" until its leaders develop the basic spiritual competence required to carry out their sacred charge. The Scripture and the Spirit have not left us in the dark on this matter, and if we choose to remain so, we will answer for the blood of those left in harm's way by our spiritual ignorance and sloth.
I have never encountered an Anabaptist church that conducts criminal background checks of applicants for baptism and membership, and as far as I know, Anabaptists have never done this. And yes, the scenario described above is a lawmaker seeking to make parents who do not affirm and promote homosexuality and transsexuality in their children guilty of felony child abuse.

In some places, the "law" does not align at all with Christian values, and this is a good example of that. Churches and Christians need to engage in discernment to understand when governments are lawful and when they are unlawful and unjust. I do not think criminal background checks from government agencies are required for baptism and church membership; if they were, the Bible would tell us to do them.

(nothing about churches conducting criminal background checks)

How, exactly, does someone find out a supplicant’s criminal background unless the person either volunteers the information or else you conduct a “background check”?

Certainly they could volunteer the information.

I see where you're going with this, not sure I agree 100%. So, if a newcomer becomes a regular attender, is he/she supposed come right out with "yeah, by the way, I'm a registered sex offender."?
I know a convicted child sex offender personally who does precisely this. He is so consistent about it that he mentions it not only upon signup to any conference or group event (which naturally leads to frequent bans from such events), but as a matter of course in personal introductions as well.
If they don't, there's another option that's even better than a criminal background check.

Maybe you could ask Joy, as that was who introduced the term "Tier 3 child molestation record" into the conversation and advocated for the church to make a judgment as to whether the person has repented.

And contrary to your accusation, jahertz said nothing about prohibiting church membership for anyone with a criminal record.

I never said that. I did say “pass”, which would up to the person conduction the check to decide what “passes”.

Back to the original topic, this legislation purports to make it felony child abuse not to affirm a child as a homosexual or a transsexual. This presents a real dilemma for how Anabaptists interact with law enforcement and the government.

Jahertz said nothing about a requiring a criminal background check as a condition of church membership.
