Our local favourite son, President McKinley, lies in state in a rather elaborate above ground “vault”. Actually, the casket is just sitting out in the open of a big room, but it has a vaulted ceiling, so I suppose it’s a vault.

The Grey Lady refers to the queen being buried - also to the casket being lowered into the vault. How are you defining "actually buried"?

According to an article I read, they are not buried in the ground.
Instead, they are interred in a chapel, perhaps at Windsor Castle. I'm not really sure what that means.

It means this entombed in marble in St. George's Chapel which I think is on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

She will be entombed next to her father father, King George VI who's crypt looks like this

So is one casket stacked on top of the other? I think that Arlington National Cemetery does that.

Well put it this way. We had no choice and took what we were given (by God if you accept that he sets up kingdoms) and you could have chosen anyone as the family you gave Royal Status and you chose them. Well to be fair some of you also chose the Bidens or the Trumps or the Clintons.
Nuff said.

Well no. We do big state funerals in the US as well. This was Kennedy's funeral procession. The British equivalent to the Kardashians would be the Beckhams who have their own reality shows.

And more recently, this was Ronald Reagan's

Re St George VI Chapel think of pigeon hole mailboxes only larger: for caskets. That is where spouses are placed temporarily. Now that the Queen has passed she and Philip will be buried in the floor of the chapel’s crypt with the appropriate identifying slab overtop.

:laugh :hi5 That would also include choices of spouses (spices?) as in the case of Edward VIII and Harry.

So, what exactly does it mean to be "buried" in a crypt? I see a crypt is defined as "an underground room or vault beneath a church, used as a chapel or burial place." So are the caskets sitting out in the open air of an "underground room" possibly on a marble floor? We could see the casket being lowered down into the vault, but who knows what happens to it after that?

I guess I'm just wondering whether it's something similar to how the kings of old were buried in a sarcophagus and could still be visited by others, like this:
