They may estimate that a nuke in "defense" will not result in more cost then this war has already cost them in terms of political tension and wager that USA isn't willing to actually put boots on the ground.
It’s ill-advised to presume others “calculate” based on common reasoning “algorithms” or anything close. February 24 happened. It made sense to them. Pearl Harbor happened. 9-11-01 happened.

Vietnam happened. Iraq happened. Afghanistan happened. U.S. military genius and strategy doesn’t always prevent or prevail.
The bigger guy doesn’t always win. A smaller guy with nothing to lose, willing to sacrifice more may win. God may intervene.

Guys with nothing to lose, everything to gain, are true wild cards. There are many.
History reflects the error in dismissing/underestimating enemies. Annhiliating/enslaving often backfires - esp over time.

One side may lose different battles, yet over time win the war. Pride goeth before a hard fall. Many are proud.

Ken wrote: ↑Thu Sep 22, 2022 1:49 pm Actually in contrast to the above video, Putin is almost certainly bluffing.

The fact is that any first use of nuclear weapons by a nuclear state against a non-nuclear state will instantly obliterate the 1970 Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty which virtually every country in the world has signed other than Israel, India, Pakistan, North Korea, and Sudan.

In very simple terms, the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty is a promise between nuclear and non-nuclear nations in that the non-nuclear nations agree not to seek and build nuclear weapons and the nuclear nations agree not to use them against non-nuclear states. In other words, if you promise not to build your own nuclear weapons, the nuclear states agree not to use their weapons against you.

But the US and USSR were primary signatories as was China.

No nuclear state wants to see nuclear proliferation. It makes the world much less stable. This especially applies to Russia which has longer and more hostile borders than any other country in the world. Russia has no interest in seeing nations it borders like Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and even Ukraine gain nuclear weapons. And the surest way to guarantee all of those states build and arm themselves with nuclear weapons is to use them against a non-nuclear state.

That in a nutshell is why Russia is almost certainly bluffing. It would be exceedingly stupid and counterproductive for them to use nukes in Ukraine because it would lead to a proliferation of nuclear weapons across all of Russia's borders. They aren't that irrational.
Maybe, but the they might be too busy looking at short term gain to look at long term cost. They may estimate that a nuke in "defense" will not result in more cost then this war has already cost them in terms of political tension and wager that USA isn't willing to actually put boots on the ground.
Russia is surrounded by former nuclear states or technologically advanced states that may become increasingly hostile to Russia in the future: Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Lithuania, Finland, Sweden, Latvia, Estonia, Turkmenistan, Georgia, etc. More than any other country on the planet by far.

Using nukes in Ukraine will be an absolute green light for every one of those other countries to develop their own nuclear programs, either overtly, or in secret. And many of them have enough nuclear scientists and technology to do it relatively quickly. Does Russia really want 10 more nuclear states on its doorstep? The only reason it can be a bully now is because the countries that it is messing with like Ukraine and Georgia do not have nuclear weapons.

What would be the short-term gain with using nukes in Ukraine? What military targets would they use them against? Or would they just destroy Kyiv or Odessa? All that would accomplish is make Russia even more toxic internationally and countries like China and India who are now more or less neutral would come under immense pressure to cut any remaining ties with Russia. And it would absolutely guarantee that whatever fractures might exist within the EU and NATO would all vanish in the face of a Russia using nukes.

I don't think the threat of nuclear weapons use is credible because it makes no sense. The threat of universal mobilization and conscription is a bit different. That is about the only way that Russia can escalate the war. But they are more constrained by logistics and equipment at the moment than troops. And training up new soldiers is not a fast or easy process. Unless they just want to send a bunch of untrained cannon fodder into the meat grinder. When the US ramped up for WW2 it took about 2 years from Pearl Harbor in 1941 to the first major invasion of the European mainland by US troops during the Sicily invasion in 1943 and another year after that until D-Day. And that was with total mobilization of the US economy and a war that was far less technologically advanced than modern 21st century warfare.

And the US doesn't have to put boots on the ground. The US could send a carrier group into the Black Sea and enforce a NATO no-fly zone across all of Ukraine. All without sending a single ground soldier into Ukraine. NATO has more aircraft carriers than the Russians have total warships. And NATO has 5-10 times more of every category of aircraft than Russia and what they do have is more advanced and capable.

Basically Russia is out of good options.

Ken,

Nearly all the states you listed are former republics of the USSR. It is ridiculous to call them “nuclear capable”. If I seceded from the U.S. would my back yard be a “formerly nuclear capable state”?

Always have been. The U.S. southern border has reflected this for decades. DECADES.

It’s easy to be disgusted that such a BASIC tenet of any nation, bar none, feigns ignorance at how to establish a national border with clear rules that can be observed, defended, respected. Congress, and presidents have kicked the can down the road - all my life!
One after another.

The Three Stooges couldn’t have done worse. Why do The People allow it?! Martha’s Vineyard isn’t.

Most of the pics i’ve seen over decades, U.S. southern border, are of virile young men of or close to military age.
If they were armed, any different from Putin invading Ukraine, Feb 24 2022? i don’t see it.

OF COURSE most are young strong men, military age. Who better to make the journey?!

Putin used archaic military strategy. Old school.
He could have sent hoards of young men, unarmed, into Ukraine. who would stop them?

Don’t forget to mislabel them children+families.

It isn't ridiculous at all. Most of these former Soviet countries have universities that have nuclear physics and nuclear energy programs as a legacy of the Soviet era and most of them have domestic nuclear energy programs and expert physicists. Ukraine, for example. Reconstituting a nuclear weapons program for a country like Ukraine is a far smaller lift than in a country like Pakistan or North Korea that doesn't have any scientists with nuclear power and nuclear weapons experience.

And yes, if a major state like California or New York or even New Mexico seceded from the US it would not take long for such a state to develop its own nuclear weapons. Just like in the US, in the former USSR the nuclear weapons industry was dispersed and not centralized. The US, for example, has 17 national laboratories dedicated to nuclear technology so many different states would have nuclear weapons knowledge and capacity if they spun off as independent nations.

The surest way for Russia to cause nuclear weapons proliferation across all of its borders is to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine. The obvious lesson that every other country will draw from that is that the only reliable way to deter Russian nuclear aggression is to have you own nuclear missiles that you can target at Moscow.

These are just the Federal laboratories where nuclear weapons and civilian nuclear technologies are developed. Many universities in the US also have such programs and expertise. The University of Washington, for example, has an institute for nuclear theory, a nuclear engineering program, and an center for experimental nuclear physics. I expect you can find similar programs at Ohio State and many other major research universities across the country.

Sounds like Russia has a lot of confidence in the results of their fraudulent "referendum" in the Donbass if this is how they are conducting it. This is also exactly how they conducted their fraudulent "referendum" in Crimea in 2014 that Josh cites upstream.

Ken,
Let’s recap:

“Fraudulent referendum” = outcome which the Western empire doesn’t like.

“Free and fair elections” = the obviously fraudulent 2020 presidential election

Note that if you criticise Dominion’s voting machines etc as anything less than perfect you get sued for millions of dollars.

Seriously. Are you defending what Russia is doing now? Going door to door and making residents vote on an open (non-secret) ballot at gunpoint? This is a thread about Russia's actions in Ukraine.

As for the 2020 election. The place to post your conspiracy theories about that is in the 1800+ thread here on this forum where you will find ZERO actual documented systemic fraud. Over 1800 posts and no one is able to show actual evidence of systemic fraud in any jurisdiction in the country that is legitimate enough to withstand scrutiny in a court of law. Such as actual fraudulently cast ballots being discovered. Don't you think it is finally time to stop repeating Trump's unhinged rantings about the 2020 election? He is already the most spectacular sore loser in all of history. It has long since ceased to be interesting. Now it is just embarrassing.

If you actually watch the video, his definition of Russia "not losing" is retreating from Ukraine and leaving it in ruin while announcing to the Russian people that they accomplished their goal of a de-Nazified Ukraine. I doubt most people consider that a Russian win.
