The Anabaptist perception towards insurance policies!
Self explanatory poll. Discuss as needed. I'm referring to policies you need to get through a broker, not a church endorsed or sponsored program (like many conservative groups have for vehicles).
I would also like to hear about any statements your church would have considering insurance policies.

I don’t use a broker, but I have policies required by law that would pay other people for losses I would owe them.steve-in-kville wrote: ↑Fri Sep 23, 2022 6:34 am Self explanatory poll. I avoid anything that would end up subrogating me so that I would end up being the plaintiff in a lawsuit.

The only thing I remember seeing in writing was to avoid life insurance. Maybe that was just an old school Brethren perception. I know there are groups that avoid property insurance, but you can't get away with that if you have a mortgage through a bank. Private funding, perhaps?

Re: The Anabaptist perception towards insurance policies!
Personal Health - Our head minister publicly encourages people to have either the Mennonite congregational MUTUAL AID (more than just our own congregation), a employer sponsored health INSURANCE, or some other type of INSURANCE. (I should have also checked OTHER, because as "seniors", we are both on Medicare. (I am past retirement age, but not retired, so I am currently just paying in.)
I'm not aware that our congregation (or the ministers) have taken any position on Life Insurance, but I have continued to ascribe to and follow what I was taught in the MB congregation and at home - that Christians should not engage in this. (I will not 'argue' about this, either.)
Auto & Home Insurance - We have a typical policy. At one time I had insurance on my vehicle through WBT, but after there was a parking lot accident and I fixed it myself, they cancelled my policy.

I chose "other" because I have only the policies that are required by law, in which case they function as a tax or wealth redistribution plan.

That's the same perception my dad always had.

The church-related property mutual aid does not cover liability, so there's a commercial policy for that.

Yes you can. Use your Mennonite mutual aid. Banks accept it.steve-in-kville wrote: ↑Fri Sep 23, 2022 7:42 am The only thing I remember seeing in writing was to avoid life insurance. Some do, not all. You might pay a higher interest rate as the bank might need to keep the loan on their own books instead of selling it to Fannie Mae or otherwise securitizing it. Steve would probably remember the Lebanon Valley Farmers Bank. They would have accepted a church letter in place of property insurance. Ephrata Bank does as well I believe.Josh wrote: ↑Fri Sep 23, 2022 11:04 amYes you can. Use your Mennonite mutual aid. Re: The Anabaptist perception towards insurance policies!
Major banks (Chase, Huntington) accept mutual aid no problem, for both mortgages and car loans. My mortgage got sold twice since I got it and sits with SLS now.
On the other hand, Kubota’s in house financing didn’t accept it and demanded going with their own insurance company. Solution: don’t finance with them.
