The Queen is dead

Post by RZehr »

“And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither:” - Job 1:21

I find myself thinking of the power and wealth and influence that she had, and how at very moment of death, she had more in common with a powerless pauper Lazarus than she has with any living king or queen on earth.

Am I the only one who thinks about where her eternal abode is? It also makes me introspective. While we aren’t as wealthy and powerful as she was, what about me? How am I wielding the power, or influence that I have? Am I hoarding up treasures?
“But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.“ - Luke 12:20-21
Was she found to be rich towards God? Am I rich towards God?

All the pomp and splendor she enjoyed on this earth. That serves her nothing now, just like all the pomp of her funeral is meaningless to her.
She lived a really long time by todays standards. And yet I’m sure in a lot of ways she might have felt like it sped past. Life goes so fast.
“LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am.” - Psalms 39:4

i’m such an outsider to England’s royals, i don’t often think of them.
i don’t envy their lives. they have wealth+prvilege, but this comes with many demands+restrictions, while they are fully human.

as for Queen Elizabeth, she presented a consistent appearance for 70 years, i’m not sure many could have done it “for life” as she did. it always seemed more of a responsbility for her than a privilege, the way she did it. not a drudge, she didn’t comlain. still. an interesting phenom - yet not rife with intrigue/scandal.

a lot of royal life would seem a drudge to me. so many boring rules!

she was born into her life. she handled it uniquely. i never got the impression she was motivated by the love of money.
she seemed to have a conscience about the responsibility of her role. that’s different from being ambitious about power+money.

she is in God’s hands now. as we all will one day be. i’m not sure i’ve handled my small role as well as she handled her large role.

I heard this yesterday afternoon, and I was a bit saddened as I have strange interest in British royalty. Perhaps not in the queen herself, but in their leadership structure.

We all shall stand before the judgement seat and none will be queens or kings or anything in the sight of God.

I have been thinking about allegiance our forefathers gave to the King of England when they moved to the US... could we do that today? I personally couldn't give that.

I would give the King of England the same allegiance as I give the current American government if I had lived back in the time when he was ruler over the colonies. It would have been challenging to navigate that allegiance during the revolution, and it was challenging for the nonresistant folks then.

In Catholic World, it's not our business to judge people's eternal destiny, just to pray for their souls which is what we do for everyone, be they heads of state, kings, queens or the man or woman standing next to us.

I have a Canadian friend who recently worked through the process to reside/work in the US. He got stuck on the requirement to swear allegiance. I think he eventually found a way around it.

Maybe the example of earlier immigrants could serve as warning about relating to host countries. Be very careful when they want you to pledge allegiance. Who knows what comes next.

I’m willing to bet that pretty much every country on the planet has some sort of oath of allegiance that is required for citizenship. Perhaps not simply for a work visa, but for any sort of permanent residency leading towards citizenship. When my wife immigrated here from Chile I don’t recall any sort of oaths of allegiance when she got her green card. That was more or less automatic with our marriage. But when she got her citizenship she had to. There is some sort of oath of citizenship that you take. Normally it is a big ceremony with lots of people. We did it at the big auditorium at Trinity University in San Antonio. There were probably several hundred others there doing the same thing at the same time with their families. Everyone had to stand up and recite the oath of naturalization. The text is as follows:

I guess it's good for me that I was born a citizen because I could never take that pledge.
