Supreme Court Overturns Roe v. Wade

Things that are not part of politics happening presently and how we approach or address it as Anabaptists.

First and foremost, I'm happy for the decision because I believe it will save the lives of innocent unborn children. I'd love to see the pro-life camp follow up by quickly promoting more robust social support for those who now will carry their babies to term. Although this is a morally correct opinion in my view, it must also be recognized as a socially and economically disruptive one as well - one that will especially put poor women in a bind.

Secondly, as an Anabaptist, I find distasteful the partisan crowing on the right and raging on the left...and my instinct is to steer clear of it and quietly give thanks, like I do whenever Caesar decides for justice.

If the aborted all end up in heaven then what's the big deal ? Would this not be better than them coming into this world and likely ending up in hell ?
or
If aborting a child is murder, God will forgive sins, so won't asking forgiveness after aborting still allow one to be saved ?
I would respond with the gospel Jesus preached, the kingdom of heaven is here, turn to it and turn from your sinful ways. Questions like those arise from locating the kingdom away from the present and into the next life.

Philip Yancey was onced asked, "If I divorce my wife and marry another woman, can God forgive me?"
Yancey answered something like this, "God can forgive any sin. But the bigger question is whether you will have sufficient desire and motivation to repent of your sin and seek forgiveness, if you willingly commit sin."

When Texas recently implemented its ban, the amount of abortions dropped by 10% in the state. I’m seeing estimates of 13-14% drop nationwide post-Roe.
Did the amount increase in the surrounding states?
People will predictably change their behavior over time as they do in response to ANY law or regulation. I would expect that to include among other things:

1. Increased use of contraception especially including passive methods like IUDs and hormonal implants. I would expect both young women and parents of teens they suspect or know are sexually active to be more diligent about making sure they are protected against pregnancy. And I would expect medical providers in states that prohibit abortion to be more assertive about promoting passive forms of birth control. Even for girls who are not sexually active just to protect against the risk of rape, like girls going off to college. Or just in case they do become sexually active.

2. Increased use of mifepristone and misoprostol as well as Plan B which will become more available online and something that people will start to stockpile "just in case" the same way they stockpile food, ammunition, weapons, etc. We live in a global world and these days it is trivially easy to do things like telemed to a clinic in another state, Canada, or even India.

3. Increased travel out of state to seek abortions.

And yes, there will be more babies born. Most likely concentrated in the lower socioeconomic strata where people don't have the means, family support, or initiative to do those things.

All the more reason for God's people to follow Jesus and identify with and support the poor.

Yes. I read news accounts of an influx of patients in clinics in Oklahoma and Kansas.

There also was an increase of ordering abortion pills by mail.

I think there are good intentions with statements like this, but I’m skeptical that this will happen on a large scale. Nothing prevented Christians from doing this before the repeal of Roe.

Yancey answered something like this, "God can forgive any sin. But the bigger question is whether you will have sufficient desire and motivation to repent of your sin and seek forgiveness, if you willingly commit sin."
I believe there are many kinds of sin that we willingly commit as Christians because we don't regard them as sin and therefore are not motivated to seek forgiveness. It could also be our interpretation of scriptures that is in error or an unwillingness to repent of certain sins that we think are unimportant. I believe the closer we walk with the Holy Spirit as our guide, He convicts us of sins that we didn't even regard as sin in an earlier stage of our walk with the Lord.

Since the sin of aborting is whether to be considered as murder, some Christians may not regard this as murder and don't regard this as sinning. There are many Christians who joined in the killings in wars and also did not regard taking another's life in these circumstances as sin. Many, probably most, see killing these enemies as a right thing to do and not sin. Does God forgive them of these killings if they don't recognize these as sins ? I believe He does.

So, like we read in the Psalm, we should ask God to search our hearts and actions for areas we are sinning, repent of the sins that are brought to our mind by the Holy Spirit and trust that Jesus blood goes on cleansing us from all sin even the ones we are not aware of yet. I was raised with a fear that if I was involved in some kind of sinning and did not ask forgiveness before I dropped dead, I may not be saved. I believe this is a wrong view of God's forgiving.

I think many of us willingly commit sins right here on this forum and if others are like me, I don't confess and always turn from these sins and don't even recognize some of my thoughts as sinning.

Anyway, we are warned not to continue in what we are convicted is sin. Sin has it's consequences and sometimes we chose to learn the hard way.

i’m not sure what this means. huge efforts are established+made, definitely by Catholics, but by many Christian denoms.
at this time, simply increasing existing resources+services is the expectation (i’m seeing). some may not be Christian? -
i’m not sure about SAFE BOXES offered in many communities? ..

just because gov funding isn’t driving, doesn’t mean there aren’t “large scale” efforts.

one problem has been secularists attempting to shut down Christian/Catholic adoption services, limit, hog-tie, etc.
but, recent court rulings have helped.

a LOT goes on, vibrant+active. i expect efforts will be made a bit easier now. (notwithstanding attacks on pro life clinics, etc.)
hopefully, they will settle down once they realize they haven’t been much-harmed. no death-blow to for-profit abortion, so to speak.

This case was actually about Mississippi. When these numbers start looking more like the rest of the wealthy developed world I will believe it. Until then I'll be very skeptical too

Note, you can choose any metric you want and the numbers are similarly bad. A graph of child poverty rates will look similarly bad. The child poverty rate is about 3% in Denmark compared to about 20% in the US and 30% in Mississippi.

Pretty pathetic showing for a so-called Christian nation that is also the wealthiest society that has ever existed on the face of the earth.
