Philippians 1:1-11
Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition

1 Paul and Timothy, the servants of Jesus Christ; to all the saints in Christ Jesus, who are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons.

2 Grace be unto you, and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 I give thanks to my God in every remembrance of you,

4 Always in all my prayers making supplication for you all, with joy;

5 For your communication in the gospel of Christ from the first day until now.

6 Being confident of this very thing, that he, who hath begun a good work in you, will perfect it unto the day of Christ Jesus.

7 As it is meet for me to think this for you all, for that I have you in my heart; and that in my bands, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers of my joy.

8 For God is my witness, how I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.

9 And this I pray, that your charity may more and more abound in knowledge, and in all understanding:

10 That you may approve the better things, that you may be sincere and without offence unto the day of Christ,

11 Filled with the fruit of justice, through Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

Verse 6 brings me to tears just to read it -- my God will do that for me.

Joy:
Verse 6 brings me to tears just to read it -- my God will do that for me.
in my eyes, you personify Verse 6.
Verse 2 reminds me of MN’s Quaker, Bill Rushby. i adore that greeting. it never fails to lift my heart.
i hope he engages here.

I'll start off with a question about verse 6 -
Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
Sounds like Paul believed in eternal security. Could it be that Paul was confident that if anyone was truly born again by the grace of God, God would see to it that their salvation would last forever ?

If so, then scripture references to 'falling away' relate to abandoning a religious experience of some sort but not one of truly being born again. If not, how could Paul be so confident to make such a statement ?

OK setting aside any discussion on eternal security

I think it interesting in these first 11 verses that Paul in verses 4 and 7 talked about having joy. The joy that Paul had in the circumstances of being in prison for the sake of his Gospel proclamation. A wonderful testimony in that the joy of the Lord does not depend on circumstances. Sometimes we allow circumstances to take away our joy. Paul shows a renewed mind to consider adverse circumstances in a joyful way. A characteristic of the fruit of the Spirit at work in Paul.

I got to thinking this morning about what I am allowing into my thoughts that take away my joy in the Lord. One of the first things that came to mind was the state of this world (politics, wars, climate change, abortion, etc) and when I allow the concerns of this world to rob me of the joy that scripture says 'is our strength'. I thought of the Christians I know that don't seem to be jolted from their joy in the Lord by what is going on in this old world. What a testimony and enjoyment this is to be around those who really have put their trust in God and the fruit of the Spirit is so evident in their lives.

What Jesus prayed just prior to returning to the Father also speaks of joy. His desire is that we have His joy fulfilled in us. A joy unspeakable and full of glory. An overflowing with joy. Again, reminds me of Paul and Silas in prison singing hymns unto the Lord. Paul, so wanted the Philippians to be experiencing the joy that he was having as he wrote this letter.

So, this introduction in this letter to the Philippians to me is a reminder that the Christian life available to us is about a joy regardless of circumstance and not a happiness related to circumstance. What a witness in itself for the world to see a joy in us that would want them to inquire about it's source.

I'm turning my attention to this thread now. I plan to start the next section (1:12-26) two weeks from now, on Thursday, July 21.

As a side note to the moderators - it was hard for me to find this thread via search, because the headings on the posts are wrong (they say "Re: Philippians Study 2022: Background and context"). I'm not sure why this is happening.

The heading on my post above is correct, though. Not sure why.

The posts that were split from the other thread, and posts quoting those posts, have the title carried over from the original thread. It might be easiest to locate the correct thread by starting from the General Theology index page.
