Sattler College Turmoil

Things that are not part of politics happening presently and how we approach or address it as Anabaptists.

Basically a Stoney-Campbellite edition of Anabaptism with a lot of obscure historical stuff thrown in. Conservatives will be uncomfortable with this. Most CAs are trying to conserve what was mainstream in 1950 (Nationwide, Eastern) or 1980 (BMA), etc.
Why do people associate FOTW with campbellism / restoration movement? I see similarities, but it seems fairly different now.
Both are getting their cues from their understanding of early church writings.
Both see themselves as an attempt to restore the church to its original design.
Both see themselves as The Church that others should join.
Both practice weekly communion, baptism for the remission of sins, etc.

At this time, the majority of FOTW members are from Anabaptist churches which makes for an Anabaptist cultural flavor with restorationist ideology.

I now see that Josh just posted similar things...

Do you have actual data regarding what amount of FOTW members are from Anabaptist groups? Does that count Finny who was with EPMC for awhile and MM who was with Mennos in Oregon and at Ephrata Christian Fellowship? Or is this strictly folks with ethnic names?

Also...I'm curious what is the total number of adults regularly attending FOTW congregations.

So how big actually is FOTW? Their web site locates 5 congregations in the US and one in Canada. Someone said it might be 8 and someone else said the Minneapolis congregation is splitting off.

How many total members are we talking about and how many are high-school age children who are college bound?

And of those, how many are likely to want to attend Sattler?

There was a survey done not long ago, I think by EMU, in which they surveyed the college choices of college-bound students attending Mennonite high schools. I think no more than 30% indicated that they were planning to attend a Mennonite college. About 40% were planning to attend public universities and the other 30% were planning to attend other non-Menno private schools. And that was just a survey of college-bound students at Mennonite high schools so doesn't include those not planning to go to college or Mennonite students in public high schools. And not every student attending a Menno HS is Menno. But if roughly 50% of HS students attend a 4-year college which is I think about the national average, that puts the Menno college enrollment rate at about 15% give or take. This would be mostly MCUSA and related groups. But they are the only numbers I can find.

Extrapolating to FOTW, if they want about 25 students per year to enroll to keep up their 100-student enrollment, that would mean they'd need a HS student population of about (25 / 15% = 167) 167 graduating HS students per year or about 667 total students in HS who are attending and members of FOTW nationwide to support Sattler without recruiting students from outside the denomination.

Is that realistic? Do they have anything close to those numbers?

EDIT: I see Dan and I posted basically the same question.

Ken, FotW are born again homeschoolers. Meaning they believe if you are really doing what is in the Lord's will you will homeschool. MM himself communicated that to me very directly.

Either way it is the same question. Do they have enough HS age members to support Sattler without recruiting from the outside?

No. But that was never the idea anyway.

Is MMs dogmatic approach indicative of the FOTW movement in general? Or Finny's?

This perspective reminds me of some of the Charity zealotry when we were involved with the Charity movement back in the 90s - when almost every childrearing choice was couched as a matter of black and white morality. Needless to say, the long-term results of that type of authoritarian moralizing were mixed at best.

The FotW movement in general I am believe...Ernie could maybe confirm, but I know Finny and MM are.

No. Not now. They have very few if any people that old.
