In catastrophic times [not limited to famine] urban areas often suffer the most, for several factors.

as you have described, urban areas are dependent on rural areas for many things, including agriculture.
i enjoy the urban life. people are very dependent on steady supplies, and “everything working” just so.

Katrina was a harrowing example. Mt St Helens was another, without anywhere near the population.
NYC 9-11-2001 was another. 2011 Japan’s tsunami. Many in my lifetime.

Bad things happen.
Rural areas are also dependent on urban areas. Rural areas have the same dependency on the supply chain as urban areas since most food raised in rural areas does not feed that community but is sent out to food processing plants. The food at grocery stores is most of the time not locally sourced. The rural communities I know are highly dependent on Walmart and Amazon.
Much of rural America is actually considered to be "food deserts." You can crisscross the Great Plains and most small towns no longer even have a grocery store. At best they might have a Dollar General with little in the way fresh food. You might have to drive 20-30 miles to find the nearest Wal-Mart in a larger town. As for the crops grown locally, it's mostly just wheat, soybeans, and corn produced at an industrial scale. I suppose one can grind corn by hand and make tortillas. Or mill your own flour. But that will get old pretty fast and isn't a very balanced diet.

And if you are a farmer in Western Kansas and want to grow fresh vegetables, where do you sell them? The nearest town might be 50 miles away and will likely have a Wal-Mart that has its own corporate supply chain of vegetables from CA or Mexico and isn't going to be interested in your locally grown products.

And good farm land that is reasonably close to urban markets is getting increasingly expensive and out of the reach of people who want to farm. There was an article about that in this week's NYT:

How ‘Fairy Tale’ Farms Are Ruining Hudson Valley Agriculture
Farmers are losing properties to wealthy buyers from the city, while leasing land from the new owners can feel like a “modern-day feudal system.”

I'm not sure how we got onto this topic. But Russia has vast amounts of empty space and rural countryside. And what you are calling "Dacha gardens" were not urban gardens in the middle of the city. Such as people growing vegetables on the 6th floor balcony of their apartment flat. They were private small-scale rural farms that fell outside of the communist system of large collective state agriculture. So essentially just rural small-scale commercial agriculture. And even then we are talking about mostly just fruits and vegetables, not grains, meats/fish protein, and dairy which are really the staple calories consumed by most people.

I'm all in favor of growing one's own food and being sustainable. But commercial agriculture in whatever form is really necessary to feed large urban populations. It has been so since Biblical times when Egyptian grain fed Rome and crops from the Galilee and Jordan River Valley as well as fish from the Sea of Galilee and Mediterranean fed Jerusalem.
People commuted to the land surrounding the urban areas to grow their food. I think you're incorrect about commercial agriculture being needed to feed people.
What percentage of Russians own dachas? What’s the average plot size for a dacha? How much land do you on average need in order to be food self-sustainable?
Most of that info is here https://smallfarmersjournal.com/russian-dacha-gardens/

What i wrote was really just a summary of the contents of that video. It's a dystopian view of what certain modern technocrats have in store for us but I don't really believe any of it is inevitable. (Even if I wrote it that way for rhetorical effects.)

As an assessment of the goal of certain technocrats with global ambitions today (which I think is fairly accurate) I think this is one important strand in our contemporary situation that could contribute to an apocalyptic scenerio, if indeed any such thing really could happen, which is why I thought it interesting and belongs in this thread.

If anyone wants to discuss it in more detail I'd appreciate starting another thread for that, because I don't want this subject to take over this thread.

In the context of this thread, this is just one contributing strand I see among others.

Thanks.

There is no need to delve into "conspiracy theories". One can go and watch the output of crowds like the one that gets together at Davos and they will tell you exactly what they want for your future. Amongst other things:

- They would like to eliminate private ownership of property

- They think that the common people should all be crammed into big apartment buildings and not allowed to own a yard, a private home, etc.

- They think the common people shouldn't be able to have private vehicles and should instead be forced to take public transportation (which can be controlled, require COVID vaccines to use, etc.)

- They want air travel to become very expensive for common people with things like carbon taxes. (Private jets for the wealthy will be exempt, as we saw happen in the E.U. last week when carbon taxes only apply to common airlines but not to private jets.)

- They would like to eliminate cash and require all transactions to be digital and able to tracked/traced/monitored by the government and big private businesses.

- They want to see techniques and mechanisms in place to force everyone to submit to mandatory vaccines, things like mandatory masking, and so on, and be able to catch violators using things like cameras and facial-recognition technology and outcast such people from society by making them unable to buy, sell, or work.

- They do not want things like independent, private schools or homeschooling to continue that are not under outside control.

- They would like to eliminate family farming and instead have farmland owned by the very wealthy.

- They would like small or independent farmers replaced with large corporations who "manage" farmland and use all hired hands. They don't want anyone living near farmland but rather want farm workers to commute from apartments in nearby cities, or else to be migrant workers who travel from place to place.

Interestingly enough they don't feel any of the above should apply to the wealthy global elites, who will continue to have their own private planes, private transportation, and be allowed to own huge amounts of land.

CORRECT. NOTHING MYSTERIOUS, AT ALL.

i’m stunned by how utterly CANDID politicians (“modern technocrats”) have become. i did not foresee it. on every level, domestic and globally. historically, politicians were always presumed to be liars.

presently, they speak right up!
they seem 100% confident no one’s listening. brains not functioning. no one’s at home.

China puts “digital handcuffs” on citizens to stop a protest by controlling health passport.

A perfect display of total state power evidencing why digital IDs and CBDCs are such a threat to freedom.

China bank protest stopped by health codes turning red, depositors say

SHANGHAI, June 14 (Reuters) - A protest planned by hundreds of bank depositors in central China seeking access to their frozen funds has been thwarted because the authorities have turned their health code apps red, several depositors told Reuters.

China has been a totalitarian regime for 70 years. Technology has nothing to do with it. They were just as totalitarian before the invention of digital IDs as after. Before digital technology they used low-tech methods like official stamps in your internal passport or ration book. Same exact result. They controlled what you could buy, where you could go, etc.

My point was just how convenient such tools are to any would-be tyrants.
Worded poorly, maybe. " ... such a potential threat to freedom."

Every single technology ever invented can be a tool to would-be tyrants.

Cell phones
Highways
Guns
Centralized distribution systems like airport and seaports
Banks
Computers
Radio
Television
Internal combustion engine.

We would have to dial civilization back to the Stone Age if you want to avoid any technologies that might help tyrants. And even then we would still have tyrants.
