Now that is a novel idea.barnhart wrote: ↑Mon Jun 06, 2022 11:39 pm I would like to advance the thought experiment that all churches are transitional or temporary. In the first chapters of the Revelation, Jesus declares some of the churches Paul planted 30 years earlier to be near death. Even though there was activity and structure, Jesus still says they were dead in the areas that count.
If I were currently planting a church, I would entertain the idea of writing in an expiration date from the beginning. After a period of time, say 15, 20 or 30 years, the structure dissolves and the members are left the task of reorganization.
In the book, Historical Drift, Must My Church Die?, the author Arnold Cook shows the life span of a church as an arch. He points out that as a church is about to reach the height of the arch, it should serve as a launching point for starting the next arch. Otherwise it will peak and then begin its descent and look back at the top of the arch as the golden days.
