My mother always said people will be upset, talk, and yammer about something until "a dog with a longer tail comes along",
then they focus on that.

Well the dog with a longer tail has come with the whole Roe V. Wade leak.

i can only imagine Zelensky’s head is spinning. he’s no angel, but i can’t help but empathize. 2 wolves at Ukraine’s door.

this is what now happens in protracted wars. big interest to get it ramped up, then sporadic media interest, “depending.”
the people on the ground suffer, but, headlines .. “meh.”

your mother was correct.
now on a grand scale, with 24/7 for-profit “news” reporting demands daily circus. demanding that longer tail.
even if it’s a fantasy tail. fantasies are even better! the hollywood way.

as Josh describes above, and others have posted over+over, RvW will not make a whole lot of difference in for-profit abortions.
the abortion corporations+their politicians have paved the way (literally “paved” with strategically locating clinics+transportation) -
for-profits+their politicians aren’t about to “suffer” losses due to any ol’ USSC ruling! NO WAY.

Z is in a no win position. he should have been all over DJT’s 2019 recommendation to find resolution with Russia.
imho.

will Zelensky+Ukraine find themselves abandoned by the ultimately fickle, short attention-span legacy politicians+media?
it’s an industry wherein you’re only as good as your next story. (“story” being the operative word.)
The left is in a full-blown panic about a possible Supreme Court decision, so just like the left has entirely forgotten about COVID, they may forget about Ukraine too.
From the little i’ve seen today, they are out-doing themselves over this.
Total nonsense. But that does not stop them.

The pattern was established 2016-2020, unfortunately, it paid off for them. “The end justifies the means.”
As long as hysteria pays, hysteria is what will happen.

The gear is: MORE.

I just checked wapo, there are no headlines regarding COVID.
[/quote]

At https://www.washingtonpost.com/ there is a box:
Track covid: Daily U.S. cases rose
by 26% in the past week
Clicking the link brings you to
Tracking U.S. covid-19 cases,
deaths and other metrics by state

More than 996,000 people have died from coronavirus in the U.S., and more than 81,606,000 cases have been reported
...
This is followed by a number of charts with the details.
I don't have access to the print version; you may be correct about it. They used to have a link for "Print Edition" but that's gone. I miss it.

Sometimes people here write really goofy stuff about liberals. It’s as if people here have never heard of a “news cycle,” which isn’t an ideological thing, but how news works. The longer that the war in Ukraine lasts, the less likely it will be on the front pages of news sources from across the ideological spectrum. News always focuses on the next crisis because that’s what sells news.

MennoNet has the same tendency. For a long time, the Covid thread here dominated the forum — since February 2020, over 6600 posts about Covid were posted here on MN. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, that thread has dropped off. It’s not that we’ve forgotten that Covid is still an issue (it still is) but that most of us are now paying attention to something else.

Not everything is a liberal conspiracy.

This is definitely a part of the liberal conspiracy to hide the liberal conspiracy that is conspiring to hide or minimize news that could undermine the liberal conspiracy.

We’ve discussed this question. Here’s todays NYT:
Russia’s War Has Been Brutal, but Putin Has Shown Some Restraint. Why?
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/03/worl ... ticleShare
Russia’s war against Ukraine has leveled cities, killed tens of thousands of people and forced millions of others from their homes.

But quietly, some military analysts and Western officials are asking why the onslaught has not been even worse.

Russia could be going after Ukrainian railways, roads and bridges more aggressively to try to stanch the flow of Western weapons to the front line. It could have bombed more of the infrastructure around the capital, Kyiv, to make it harder for Western leaders to visit President Volodymyr Zelensky in shows of unity and resolve.

From what I have read, Ukraine is a very large country and they are limited in their ability to strike deep beyond the front lines because....

1. They are running out of precision-guided long distance missiles which are an exceedingly expensive method of attacking lower value targets like railroad tracks which can usually be easily repaired. And as the article notes, their guided missiles aren't very good and have a high failure rate. Ukrainians are also getting better at shooting down slower-moving cruise missiles.

2. The Russians are are loath to run conventional bomber raids deep into Ukrainian-held territory because Ukraine still has robust air defenses and fighter planes and can more easily shoot down slower moving bombers as opposed to faster moving fighter planes.

Consequently, most of their infrastructure attacks are limited to artillery which has a limited range so can only hit cities close to the front line. Reportedly shelling has all but stopped in Kharkov where the Ukrainian army has pushed Russian lines back mostly beyond artillery range of the city,

And Russian aerial bombing is mostly limited to targets within Russian-held territory like Mariupol. If you look at a map, Mariupol is on the Black Sea near the Russian border so Russian bombers can attack that city without going anywhere near any Ukrainian-held air space. The Russians have been utterly indiscriminate in their bombing of territory where they control the airspace such as Mariupol. This hardly represents restraint. The Russian siege of Mariupol is now estimated to have been 2x more deadly and destructive than the German siege of that same city seventy years ago during WW2. This is from the AP yesterday:
https://apnews.com/article/Russia-ukrai ... 06afcac7a1

AP evidence points to 600 dead in Mariupol theater airstrike

Amid all the horrors that have unfolded in the war on Ukraine, the Russian bombing of the Donetsk Academic Regional Drama Theater in Mariupol on March 16 stands out as the single deadliest known attack against civilians to date. An Associated Press investigation has found evidence that the attack was in fact far deadlier than estimated, killing closer to 600 people inside and outside the building. That’s almost double the death toll cited so far, and many survivors put the number even higher.

The AP investigation recreated what happened inside the theater on that day from the accounts of 23 survivors, rescuers, and people intimately familiar with its new life as a bomb shelter. The AP also drew on two sets of floor plans of the theater, photos and video taken inside before, during and after that day and feedback from experts who reviewed the methodology.

I saw that piece. I've been concerned that people would see that piece and argue, "see, the Russians aren't bad." It's a talking point I've read from pro-Kremlin Gilbert Doctorow, who claims that the Russian war crimes in Bucha are a false flag and that Ukraine is responsible for the destruction of Mariupol. I think the Russian invasion of Ukraine is a brutal war of attrition, but as this piece argues, it could be a lot worse. It might still get there.
