Unfortunately, peace negotiations don't seem to be going anywhere as Russia prepares for a major attack in the East.

https://www.nytimes.com/live/2022/04/12 ... in-ukraine
President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia insisted on Tuesday that his war in Ukraine would succeed and that peace talks had reached a “dead end,” making clear that he had no intention of pulling back from a military campaign that has left cities in ruins, forced millions to flee their homes and raised disturbing accounts of atrocities committed by Russian soldiers.

Mr. Putin’s defiant remarks — including a claim that atrocities documented in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha were “fake” — came as Russia pours more military vehicles, artillery and troops into eastern Ukraine. Moscow’s forces have accelerated their strikes on civilian infrastructure as they seek to undermine the Ukrainians’ ability to resupply and support their forces.

Keep in mind, this is the NYT, whose lead/controlling editor could be and may be HRC (my opinion).
i’m surprised they so much as acknowledged talks have been going on.
They had to in this case, else, how could they report Russia reached a dead end to something that did not exist?!

i’m dismayed, wondering about the Gravitas report, P.138, and the few others, which all seemed to consistently head in one direction, versus reports of continued fighting?? That is, if Gravitas was correct, why the continued clashes? This does not add up.

Also wondering what role the Left-West has in extending conflict? i don’t trust “our” side more than the “other.”
i’m sorry to say.

i will not follow the biased+lying NYT into war.

i remain in prayer for talks to find resolution asap. and for a miracle that the Left-West would allow it.

What are you even talking about? The NYT and other mainstream outlets have been reporting about the peace talks the entire time. Today, it was Putin at a press conference who said that the talks had come to a dead end and said that the Russians were going to win the war. This isn't some sort of conspiracy putting words into Putin's mouth. He said it.

Isn't the "Gravitas Report" an Indian news program? Why are you putting so much faith in an Indian news program that has no bearing or relevance to the decisions being made? Perhaps if things are not proceeding according to your expectations, maybe you're paying attention to the wrong things.

We know that Russia is preparing to launch a major offensive in the next few days in the East in order to capture and secure as much of the Donbas and eastern and southeastern Ukraine as possible. Ultimately, it's the conditions on the ground that will determine when there is peace. Not the Gravitas Report, not the New York Times. As long as both sides believe they can win, the war will continue. There will only be peace when the cost of fighting the war is greater than the cost of peace.

i’m unsure of Gravitas, i’ve inquired about it on this forum a few times, no response.
i loosely think of it as possibly similar to Al Jazeera/The Monitor, etc. i’m not sure if that’s reasonable.

i don’t know what’s reasonable, most defining “reasonable” describe themselves as “most reasonable.” :-|

i admit to very much wanting talks to lead to resolution.
i’m not expecting peace, at least not very soon. every contributing factor works against the possiblility of peace between Russia and Ukraine. but resolution to end violence could be possible.

i would prefer the primary focus be on resolution. from Day 1, i have prayed.
the major rhetoric on both sides seems to sabotage (even) resolution.

There are only two sides to this conflict. Russia and Ukraine.

Each side has supporters and allies. The Russians have China as well as other countries like Belarus, Kazhkstan, Serbia, Armenia, Syria, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, etc. The Ukrainians have most of Western Europe and the US. But the only countries that are actually involved in peace negotiations are Russia and Ukraine.

Twitter is full of pictures and videos of weaponry headed for Ukraine via Poland. I just noticed a prominent Ukrainian account begging for people not to post these images, to keep the Russians from knowing what is headed their way. It sounds like some severe battles are coming and it gives me a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.

The Russians have satellites and lots of spies so I doubt any of this is secret from them.

Twitter is also full, of Russian armor being transported to the region by rail as well as tank columns entering into Ukraine from the east. So both sides are gearing up for more battle.

This invasion of Ukraine is part of a pattern of Russia playing heavy-handedly with its neighbors...periodically invading and annexing as it sees fit. Sweeden and especially Finland are rightfully concerned because they are outside of NATO's "red line" of protection. Unsurprisingly, it sounds like both countries are now moving closer to deciding to join NATO in light of Putin's bullying and aggression. I can see why they would want to. What do you think about that possibility?

Sounds like it is going to happen this summer. Both Sweden and Finland.

If the Ukraine War was about NATO (and I don't think it actually was) then this is one of the biggest miscalculations in history because not only is NATO growing in membership, but most NATO members are ramping up military spending and NATO itself is projecting more military force eastward to counter Russia.

After watching what is happening in Ukraine I would want to join NATO if I was Finnish. Russia thinks it has historic claims to Finland as well.

Applying for NATO membership is not a sure thing. (Not that i understand all that’s involved.)
If NATO were just a great thing, why wouldn’t have all these countries joined decades/years ago?
This seems late in the day for a no-brainer (as now presented).

Questions of NATO over reach in years prior to Feb 24 are ignored. i suspect that’s a mistake.

1997 / “Minimum Requirements for NATO Membership”
https://1997-2001.state.gov/regions/eur/fs_members.html
NATO membership is potentially open to all of Europe's emerging democracies that share the alliance's values and are ready to meet the obligations of membership.

There is no checklist for membership.

We have made clear that, at a minimum, candidates for membership must meet the following five requirements:

 --New members must uphold democracy, including tolerating diversity.

--New members must be making progress toward a market economy.

--Their military forces must be under firm civilian control.

--They must be good neighbors and respect sovereignty outside their borders.

--They must be working toward compatibility with NATO forces.

Again, while these criteria are essential, they do not constitute a checklist leading automatically to NATO membership.

New members must be *invited* by a consensus of current members.

Decisions to invite new members must take into account the required ratification process in the member states. In the case of the United States, decisions are made in consultation with Congress.

The key determinant for any invitation to new members is whether their admission to NATO will strengthen the alliance and further the basic objective of NATO enlargement, which is to increase security and stability across Europe.

1997! - The first item listed has gone off the rails since 1997. It’s The-First-Item.
Still in process of changing definitions, who knows what is/will be expected??

Conscientious folks need to beware, and be aware.
