If you look at the comments under this video, you will understand why Russia probably doesn't really care about the western sanctions at this point.

Ive always heard putin answer back, succinctly, factually, honestly and without the childish mud slinging our leaders resort to when responding. So refeshing !
@Radecree you fail to see all the deaths and destruction that NATO leaves after they bring democracy. Ask Iraq, Syria, Lybia... They FLED from Kabul!!! They bombed my country in 1999 in the middle ov Europe. NATO killed civilians here! Nobody said NOTHING! No flags on buildings, no support world was silent. My hometown was burning! Afterwards they placed NATO supportive goverment, per an exampme this pro EU goverment brought Rio Tinto here...

The bigger question is what the people on the ground - hearts and minds - want.Szdfan wrote: ↑Fri Mar 04, 2022 9:58 amOdessa is not located in the Donbas or the Crimea and is still part of the Ukraine. The city is currently preparing defenses against the Russian military as they advance on nearby Mykolaiv.Josh wrote: ↑Fri Mar 04, 2022 8:54 am Denying war crimes in Donbas is disgusting. These people have been under attack since 2014. The real question is why so many so called “pacifists” feel such a need to defend belligerent terrorists.
Ultimately, Russia doesn’t have to convince you - they need to convince people in Odessa, Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk. That’s actually going pretty well for Russia.
Odessa is a heavily ethnic Russian area.

This says it’s from 2 months ago.
My virtual friend in NW Europe spoke to this (NATO) .. maybe he saw this video?
He also compared the current situation with the Cuban Missile Crisis, not mentioned in this tape, but suggestions of weapons at the Canada-U.S. border suggest it.
There is reason to ask questions.
i’m not sure it’s honest to paint a picture of huge Russia versus small+vulnerable Ukraine, if Ukraine happens to represent the full-on West, “locked+loaded” against Russia (in and around Ukraine). In this, isn’t Ukraine being used by both sides?
i’m not in any way condoning Russia’s violent invasion into Ukraine. i’m hoping negotiations will bring an end to it. not to return.
i’m really grateful my parents warned about jumping on bandwagons. i’m sure they saw a lot in their lives.
the drumbeats of war are enticing. actual war is hellish.

Re: Russia Invades Ukraine 2022
I watched the video, and read all of the subtitle translations. I have no way of knowing how accurate the English is on this. I do know that when I've seen translations of an interview in Portuguese, the translation is only a bit of what was actually said, and sometimes not totally accurate.
So, based on what was written, I have a couple of observations. First, he made a lot of sense, as in, I can understand his point. But another realization came to me as I thought about it later. I think we tend to see the country identity, while he is speaking from the point of view of his concept of the Russian people, historically. (Much the same as I personally see my own identity, as a Plaut Deitsch person.) But I don't see the Russian people in that same way, and here's why: My people were invited by the Czarine of the Russian Empire to come settle in Ukrainian territory, which they had recently won from the Ottoman Empire through war. But there was very little relationship between the Russian people and my people, the Dutch Mennonites. (In fact, you had to have a passport in order to be allowed to leave one colony, even to visit another Mennonite colony.) There was a whole lot more interaction between the Mennonites and the Ukrainians, and other minorities who had lived there for centuries. That was the first "Russian National Entity" with which my people had contact. Then the Russian Empire fell, and the Russian Republic was formed. And at the same time, the Ukrainian Republic formed. Neither survived very long, and the Soviet Union took control of the entire area. Then, in our life time, the Soviet Union fell, and the Russian Republic formed. Putin speaks of promises made to the USSR as though they were made to the Russian people, not to the NATION that was the USSR. So from the American perspective, those promises (to not push NATO involvement farther East) had been made to an entity that no longer existed. So therefore the agreement, such as it was, was null and void.
At the same time that I see my own people as the primary identity, I don't see "Russia" in the same way, perhaps because the relationships between each of these three main political identities that people commonly refer to as "Russia" and my people are so totally different.
The first - benevolent benefactor.
The second - persecutor.
The third - .... Well, the concept of the third is perhaps largely affected by the relationship between the second “Ukraine” – the current one, until this destruction there. After the USSR collapsed, and the nation of Ukraine was formed, we (“Russian Mennonites”) received open invitations to return, even to reclaim the lands that had been taken by the USSR – remember, lands that the Russian Empire had taken from THEM, and given to us. In the last few years some Ukrainians have done lots of work, both in documentary research, and in the restoration of Mennonite cemeteries and have built monuments that “commemorate” the experiences of my people in their land. They could have remembered the Mennonites as foreigners, strangers who came in and took their lands, but instead they remember the common suffering at the hands of “the Russians” – actually the Soviets. So this friendly relationship influences my/our concept of the Russian Federation, as the common persecutor.
This skewing of perspective (self identity) is perhaps more understandable with consideration of the fact that we (Plaut Deitsch) do not have a “home land” – all we have is the collective memory of different places in which we have “sojourned”. We have never existed as any kind of political entity, as a “nation”.
I don’t know if my musings here will make much sense to the readers here (assuming that anyone reads it all), even as much sense as I can make of Putin’s thoughts. But I took the time to write this out, on the off chance that it might help someone else understand him better. (I’m not saying I agree with what he said. I don’t. Maybe a lot for the same reasons as I explained above – I do not really have a “national identity” that I can “mix up” with my ethnic and cultural-religious identity. I still see each of these Russian entities as political entities, because all of our collective relationships with them were on the political level.)

Re: Russia Invades Ukraine 2022
I don't claim to be any kind of an expert here. I posted the video because as far as I can see this is the real reason Putin invaded Ukraine. (And I didn't see that being addressed.) NATO-friendly missiles on the Russian border was definitely Putin's concern and what was Ukraine's answer? This was —temporal1 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 04, 2022 7:20 pm

Within days of that response Putin invaded.
Absolutely. Ukraine is a buffer zone between the West and the East whether it wants to be or not — that's determined by its geography. It has to be diplomatic between both sides, it cannot decide to become a NATO ally with NATO missiles in Russia's backyard — not without serious consequences.i’m not sure it’s honest to paint a picture of huge Russia versus small+vulnerable Ukraine, if Ukraine happens to represent the full-on West, “locked+loaded” against Russia (in and around Ukraine). Yes, Putin has stated he is going to "neutralize" Ukraine whether by diplomacy or by force of arms. Seriously, I hope they choose diplomacy!i’m not in any way condoning Russia’s violent invasion into Ukraine. i’m hoping negotiations will bring an end to it. not to return.

from bits i’ve read, billions in arms have been promised from the West. once it’s ramped up, it takes huge restraint to not act.
Yes. Thank you.Neto:

(I’m not saying I agree with what he said. I don’t. ..
In any conflict, it’s imperative to TRY to understand the other side, even if in stark disagreement.
If not, “to the death” is all there is. And regrets.
There is a LOT of history involved. Mutual recognition of it is important, then, the reality of today must be addressed.
This is the reality on every continent. Learn from the past. But attempting to recreate it becomes confused+chaotic.
So, “Where to go from HERE?” At the moment, “here” in Ukraine is rough.

Re: Russia Invades Ukraine 2022
I was 7 years old when the Luftwaffe began the bombing of our towns and cities. I watched as my friends’ lifeless bodies were extracted from the rubble: they were only children between the ages of 3 and 8. Some of my friends lost their limbs. Children lost their parents. All of us lost someone in that terrible and terrifying Blitz.
I am forever thankful to those people, especially the Americans who came to our aid with foods, medicines, and assistance to relocate to safety. Even the tiniest moments that offered words of comfort and a cracker helped us cope with the massive inhumanity we were experiencing from a mad man who wanted to control Europe and the world.
The Ukrainians are being terrorised and obliterated: this is not a conjecture but the conclusion of an international consensus. Ukrainian children are dying from the bombing of their schools and cities. Nearly one million have fled to Poland and other countries. The basics of life are going spare in the bomb shelters: food, water, hygiene, medical equipment and medicines. Some bomb shelters have set up neonatal units as the women give birth, many prematurely.
Ways in which each and every one of you can help these poor people
You all belong to fellowships that have the capability to help in disasters. Help them help others.
• If you are multi-lingual be a translator for refugees and those who assist them.
• If you are in a group that helps in disasters, use your particular skill sets and resources in whatever capacity that will help with food, water, hygiene, and medicines to the refugee centers and the bomb shelters.
• Give material assistance, whatever you can offer, to those groups assisting the victims.
• Everyone can pray. Offer your prayers for these poor people in addition to your material assistance.
Each and every one of you has skills and resources to help. Remember that ALL OF US will have to make an accounting of ourselves to Jesus when He asks: I was hungry and did you feed Me? I was terrified and did you comfort Me?
It is easy to sit comfortably behind a keyboard and pontificate about politics and world events. It is much harder to get into the fray of the chaos and help others. I know; I have been there and lived through the terror.
Please heed this exhortation to get off your keyboards and help these people as much as you can, in whatever way you can. Remember: Jesus praised the widow's mite as that was all she had. It is not about supporting a government or a political cause. It is about rescuing innocent lives. Children do not care about debates or arguments when they are being bombed.
