i have been “counseled” to LIE about my education, to claim i have a college degree (“no one will check”)!
recently, i was “counseled” to claim i’m on welfare, so as to qualify for gov benefits!

i find these suggestions shocking. they reflect the lack of moral code (i suspect) is widespread.
Maybe for some jobs that might be the case. But certainly not in my field. I'm currently in the process of taking a position in a different district. And they are requiring official transcripts from every university that I have attended. I can't just provide .pdf copies, they have to be official copies sent directly from the university. So I have to put transcript requests to every school I have attended.
Most of us don't work in make-work government jobs.
I don't recall ever denigrating what you do for a living Josh.

And yes, you are naïve if you don't think employers ever check credentials. Or won't fire people after the fact if they discover that they lied on their employment applications.

I can confirm that the institution that issued my diploma has never had anyone verify its authenticity - other than 1 of the 2 colleges I applied to attend. No employers ever did. I think employers just don't care about high school diplomas. They probably see them as having basically no value.

I will repeat what I said earlier: in make-work government jobs, there is a huge amount of bureaucracy. They will check and ask for verifications of every unnecessary piece of paperwork. Interestingly, when I applied for a (contractor) DoD job, they wanted mountains of paperwork to verify every job I ever had right down to a summer internship when I was 14, but they never did verify my high school diploma.

Credentials do matter Josh, for a vast array of jobs, most of which aren't government jobs. We were talking about falsely claiming to have a college degree.

Why don't you do a little experiment. Try lying about your credentials while applying for an RN position with any hospital and see if they check your credentials. Or if you manage to get hired, see how long you keep your nursing job once your fake degree and lack of credentials is discovered. Not only will you get fired, you are likely to be prosecuted for fraud. Try applying for a job with Boeing as an aerospace engineer with fraudulent credentials and see if you are discovered. Or if anyone wants you designing airplanes. Or for that matter, try lying about having a commercial driver's license and apply to any trucking company and see if they check, or how long you will keep your trucking job if your lie is discovered. None of those are government jobs.

A HS degree may or may not be important depending on the job in question and/or the community. But lying about having one is a very bad idea and actually constitutes fraud.

Back in my ambulance days, we had a crew member that claimed he was a FBI agent. Had all manner of wild stories to tell but could never prove anything. It was sad and amusing at the same time.

The most common thing seems to be wannabe Rambos who claim military service or honors that they never had or earned. There are whole web sites devoted to debunking and exposing these folks.

Probably not big problem in the Anabaptist community though! I would think people would be more likely to hide their military background in those circles, if they have it.

That's kinda funny and not funny, both at the same time. There appears to be a tendency for every male transplant/seeker to be held with suspicion of being undercover.

Yea, and that's not the way it ought to be.

Military related disclosure:
I worked at a munitions factory for several weeks while i was in college. We were building detonators and cable cutters. I was a developing pacifist at the time, too. They told us (my roommate & I) that it was "peacetime" work. I soon got curious, and asked a supervisor what exactly this stuff was intended for. The detonators were for "peace-time stock-piling", he said. May or may not ever be used. They had a program of testing samples at certain intervals after manufacturing, and as long as the required percentage went off correctly, the stock was kept. At some point it would be considered too old to be dependable, and then it would be sold to rioters. (Just kidding. It would be discarded in some fashion.) The detonators were for self-actuating mines. (This was Vietnam era, so think jungle fighting.) These small mines would be dropped out of an airplane. They land in the jungle and a trigger on the bottom fires out "fishing lines w/ hooks", then draw them back tight. When someone trips one, it pops up about waist high & explodes. Designed to maim, not to kill. The theory, he said, is that if you kill someone, you only take one man out of the battle. Maim him, and you take out two - the one you injured, and the one who tries to save him by taking him back to the medics.

We both gave notice. That was the shortest time I ever worked at a job.
[On the topic, I do have an HS diploma. Want to see it? ;) And a college one. Oh, and I also have Sheriff's criminal records check document. (I think it was required for getting a passport. Cannot remember anymore.) Now that I'm on a roll with this, they also have my fingerprints in Brazil. (Anything else you want to know?)]
