I almost never go there, but when I do, it is always broke.
A McDonald's manager recently made the news for
a video showing the complexity of Taylor soft ice cream machines, and apparently a lot of people did not know how incredibly complex these machines are.
We run one of these machines at my business, and I can tell you they are far more complex than what is shown in that short video. It takes extensive training just to learn how to disassemble, clean, and reassemble the machines. If one single rubber O-ring goes bad, the machine doesn't work. In the case of newer machines, this needs to be done every 28 days. Older machines may require cleaning every 7 days.
Depending on what component breaks, it can take a few days to get the part in. Something major such as a compressor for instance.
However, these machines do run for years without issues under proper maintenance. From what I hear about McDonald's machines, the problem is likely poor service from local Taylor repair services. We can usually get same or next day service from Taylor.
Soft serve is a whole different ball game from hand-dipped ice cream which is about as simple as it gets (plus you get better ice cream in my opinion). The difference is profitability. Soft serve is generally more profitable.
