Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
Why are you so stuck on Israel? I was curious so I looked up this 4th shot business and only about a half million or about 5% of the Israeli population has gotten a 4th shot, primarily just some elderly and immuno-compromised. Israel's overall vaccination rate is below average. In any event, what were you saying about hospitalization and death rates? Here is how Israel compares to both the UK and US in terms of hospitalization and death rates for the entire pandemic.
Israel took an early lead in vaccinations in spring 2021 but since then is a lagging country in terms of Covid vaccinations. And it's Covid hospitalizations, and Covid deaths are middle of the road. Not as bad as the worst countries, but nowhere near the top on any measure.
I think it is interesting that different countries are experimenting with different approaches. Which is a good thing. But Israel is hardly an outlier on any count.

Here's the timeline, superimposed on case count.Ken wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 1:25 pm

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
It’s a densely populated country with one of the lower vaccination rates in the developed world and with large subpopulations with especially low vaccination rates. Why would you not expect them to experience a big omicron wave?

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
In the US we've seen a Covid wave that is 3X the biggest wave we've ever had. Case numbers are insane. May have peaked, can't be sure, but the 2020-2021 winter wave peaked about this time.

Being a lagging indicator, deaths may still increase, but last winter they peaked around the same time as cases. And deaths don't look like they are going to be anywhere near record highs let alone 3X the previous peaks.

Where do you get this narrative that Israel is "lagging behind"? 80% of the eligible population has been vaccinated, and Israel is one of the places that includes children in that count. 90% percent of those over 60 have been vaccinated. Israel is also one of the most boosted nations in the world. Israel is effectively the poster-child for COVID vaccine use, which makes sense, considering what their agreement with Pfizer stipulated, and the discount they received.Ken wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 5:00 pmIt’s a densely populated country with one of the lower vaccination rates in the developed world and with large subpopulations with especially low vaccination rates. you keep talking about large subpopulations, and "pockets" of unvaccinated people. What are you talking about in Israel?

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
Israel ranks 55th in the world in the percentage of population that is completely vaccinated. Down there with countries like El Salvador and Mongolia. Yes they have a lot of people who have had booster shots, but also large populations that are completely unvaccinated. It is kind of a barbell country with people concentrated at both ends. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/202 ... acker.html. It also has very disparate subpopulations like Arab neighborhoods and ultra-orthodox neighborhoods, Russian immigrant neighborhoods, Ethiopian immigrant neighborhoods, and modern secular neighborhoods that have little connection to each other. So it is unlike more homogenous countries of similar size like say Norway or Ireland.nett wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 5:18 pmWhere do you get this narrative that Israel is "lagging behind"? 80% of the eligible population has been vaccinated, and Israel is one of the places that includes children in that count. 90% percent of those over 60 have been vaccinated. According to the NYT, Norway is at 80%, Israel is at 74%. Norway has administered 200 doses per 100 people, Israel has administered 196. Israel is also ahead of Norway in boosters.Ken wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 5:30 pmIsrael ranks 55th in the world in the percentage of population that is completely vaccinated.
