Haiti Kidnapping

Things that are not part of politics happening presently and how we approach or address it as Anabaptists.

Yes, a ransom was paid at some point. Not by CAM. And unless the Yonkers article says (which it doesn’t) that it’s secret source is one of the gang members, then I don’t understand how they’d know that the guards “permitted” the captives to escape. What a ridiculous notion. The gang was holding them longer in hopes of getting one of their leaders released from prison. That is what complicated the whole thing. Otherwise they’d have been released within a week or less of the group of three.

Interestingly, the captives could have easily picked up the guards weapon and turned it on the guards. But they chose not to. The guards left the rifle on the porch within east reach of the captives.

We were able to find both locations that they were held at, using Google satellite maps. Could see the thorn thicket and canal/stream, and mango tree.

Wise decision I suspect. Gunfire would have brought a lot of people running and I doubt you want to get into a gun battle with an armed criminal gang with just one weapon.

Sounds like often, the daytime guards would only have about one old pistol, an old junky shotgun with the forearm held on with a zip tie and also a bent barrel, and this AR that they left laying around.
I’m sure gun fire would have brought more. But I expect that many rural Americans such as these captives, would have been able to put up a fight with one AR. Sounds like these guards barely knew their way around a firearm, and one of their bosses had to call out the guards and warn them that white people generally do know their way around a rifle. Right or wrong.

There are profound differences in cultures, once leaving U.S. borders. As i’m sure many reading are well aware. i’m sure your description is not at all an exaggeration.

The weapon might not even have been loaded then. So grabbing it would have been even more futile. Then what do you do? Use it as a club?

Typically when discussing such subjects, there are two types of people: those that are thankful everyone is home and safe and don't care for the details.

The other type turns into a keyboard ninja, reads between the lines, compares statements of various people involved and looks for the holes in the story.

I can be both 8-)

on this Anabaptist forum, i understand the common faith belief to be non resistance, across the spectrum, conservative to liberal believers. so, the choice not to pick up a weapon, whether firearm, club, rock, or other, humbles me, encourages me, but, as a believing Christian, does not surprise or intrigue me.

doing so would seem anathema to Anabaptist belief in Jesus, anathema to Anabaptist history.

they chose Jesus throughout this experience. (i’m thankful these dear ones are free and returned to their loved ones.)
the “detail” that will resonate throughout time is:  they chose Jesus.

Truth cannot be -successfully- cheapened by speculation or gossip. Not in God’s time.

1 Corinthians 15:57

56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

57But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!

58Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable.
Always excel in the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.…

Same. Note: I am not particularly concerned about holes in the stories of the hostages. That is to be expected and most likely means nothing other than they are human.

After that kind of trauma there will be.

I am curious how much "in the know" CAM is/was. Maybe the FBI kept everyone ignorant for safety reasons, which is possible.
