When people like Australians say “QR code”, what they mean is giving a personally identifying number that identifies who they are and identifies their medical record before entering a building.

I assume that’s what Falco is talking about.

It is just a form of ID that is instantly verifiable. Most modern drivers licenses work the same way and have a barcode on the back. The police or any other agency can scan the back of your drivers license and instantly verify whether it is valid, suspended, or fake, and pull up your driving record, warrants out on you, etc. The only thing different about a QR code is that you are putting the barcode on your phone rather than the back of your driver's license.

You could do the same exact thing with drivers licenses if the vaccine databases were linked to the DMV databases such that anyone with a drivers license barcode scanner could scan the back of anyone's drivers license to verify vaccination status. That is actually how voter ID works in most states. The election clerk scans your drivers license barcode to verify your identity and voter registration status. Yet I don't hear anyone claiming that photo ID requirements for voting are the mark of the beast and a slippery slope towards a surveillance state.

Exactly. There's nothing special about a QR code other than it's very cost-effective. It costs next to nothing to get one for your business, put it on a piece of paper, and post it up somewhere for customers to scan. Very convenient, too. It costs nothing to get one on your phone.

Issuing photo IDs like driver's licenses costs money but they could be used just as well.

So far, I haven’t had to scan in my driver licence to enter a grocery store, nor have the fact I was present at that store entered into a government database that could subject me to being detained and imprisoned for 14 days. That’s what happens in Australia.

As an Anabaptist I’m opposed to voting - to participate in elections, one must obviously accept the “mark”.

Generally speaking I’m opposed to requiring photo IDs for all kinds of things (including voting); I just criticise Democrats who are ok with it unless it involves voting. And I criticise Republicans too who decided all kinds of intrusions are OK in the name of “anti-terrorism”. I don’t think you abound have to show ID to fly. I think voting should be conducted by groups of neighbours who recognise each other. That would be genuine democracy.

Is there a difference between scanning a QR code, and manually typing in a web address into a browser? In other words, is there a difference in terms of traceability between a business putting up a QR code vs putting up their website address?
I thought QR codes were just a quick way to get to a website, without typing.

Not that I am aware of. Companies can track all kinds of information when you visit a web site no matter how you got there. I think a QR code is just a machine-readable URL. In fact, you can make your on QR codes super easily. Teachers do it all the time when they create things like web quests and escape rooms or treasure hunts to liven up a lesson. I used to do that. Create some adventure quest where students would have to go around the school answering questions to find the location of the next QR code which I would have printed and taped to the wall in different places around the school.

For example, here is a QR code generator web site: https://www.qr-code-generator.com/

I typed in mennonet.com and generated the following QR code for mennonet.

QR codes for vaccine mandates or contact tracing don’t involve a web browser.

You instead display a QR code to a scanner upon entering a building, or else you scan the building’s QR code (that is just a building ID number) into a special government supplied phone app.

It’s called “checking in” and has been the norm in Australia for a while. Nobody does it here.

According to the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post ( to mention just the main ones I can think of) it's been the pandemic which lead to the widespread use of touchless business transactions.
NY Times

Fueled by a desire for touchless transactions, QR codes popped up everywhere in the pandemic. Businesses don’t want to give them up.

NY Post

With shutdowns, social distancing, mask requirements and other COVID-related safety guidelines in place, the current pandemic has been tough on many businesses. Interacting with and serving customers safely has become a widespread concern for a broad range of companies, from large restaurants and retail stores to smaller businesses like food trucks, bodegas and dog walkers. Fortunately, PayPal has a touch-free payment solution that enables business owners and customers to sell and buy products or services more safely.

(Note: this article is specifically addressing new Pay Pal QR Codes for touchless business transactions, and relating the novelty of it to the pandemic.)
Wall Street Journal

The pandemic has accelerated usage of ‘contactless’ payments in U.S. stores. The ultimate winners from this transition remain far from certain.
In the US the use of QR codes has been voluntary and driven by a need for safety during the pandemic. In other countries their use been mandated and tied to vaccine passports. However, all are agreed that the pandemic has accelerated their use, in one way or another.
