What do you imagine eternity in Heaven to be like?

Post by steve-in-kville »

This topic has been heavy on my heart the past few weeks. What do you imagine Heaven to be like? Will we have the same personalities? What would our relationship be with our spouse(s)? Our children? Are we going to look back and laugh at trivial things we did here on earth? Will we see the "big picture"?

I have so many questions...

The first thing that came to mind was
“No eye has seen, no ear has heard,
and no mind has imagined
the things that God has prepared
for those who love him.”
This brings me to the conclusion that we don't know and so imagining is pure speculation. But looking closer, the next verse says:
But God has revealed those things to us by his Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the deep things of God.
So I'm interested in what people feel has been revealed.

I imagine waking up like after a good sleep, without an aching body, but a perfect one. I'll be in a place like the Garden of Eden. Others have just been resurrected all around me. We'll break out in songs of praise as we see Jesus. I expect it will take time to find and hug and relate to all those we have loved (and disliked) in this life, but we'll have all the time in the world.

In the Revelation, everything revolves around God, he is the one pervasive reality, in full glory. Everything bows down before him.

Surprisingly, the nations go in and out of the gates of the heavenly Jerusalem, and "the kings of the nations" still exist.

We will, of course, have heavenly bodies that are different from our earthly bodies. But we will have bodies. And we will not marry or be given in marriage.

Whatever it's like, it's way beyond our grasp.

He has a book called "Heaven" that gives a very good perspective on it. He also has several novels that deal with Heaven, I haven't read those but my adult kids really like them.

The most moving account I have found was in a children's story written by a now forgotten female author in the 19th century.
It's about a half-grown girl who is discontent at home and wants to see something from the world, by visising its relatives.
But even if she is treated quite decently and politely by them, she feels well, that (1) she quickly becomes a disturbance, disturbing their normal ways of life, and (2) they after a short timespan try to shift her off to other relatives. And when at least one of them really needs help and has some useful tasks for her, it turns out that she is to untrained to accomplish them. In the end she is glad to go home, and the author closes the story with the words that in old age, and even more in heaven, she has found a home where she is not a disturbance and can make good use of her abilities.

And that is all I need to know about heaven.
