It looks like we are coming off the second-largest wave of Covid in the US.

According to these numbers, we were basically at 2,000 people per day dying from Covid a couple weeks ago. I don't know that I heard much about that death rate in the news. I do see that although this has been the second worst wave in terms of numbers of cases, it is the third worst in numbers of deaths, so that is evidence that this wave has been less deadly.
In October of last year, we were in a sort of trough before the huge upswing in November and December. I wonder whether we'll see another wave this winter. I find it amazing that the virus has not played itself out yet given the massive and relatively successful immunization campaign on top of a huge amount of natural immunity.
Over 44 million cases of Covid have been reported in the US.
I believe cases are probably underreported. 44 million cases is only 14% of the US population. I am pretty sure that the real rate is quite a bit higher because not nearly everybody who had Covid, even people who were pretty sick, was tested. As of now, 57% of the population is fully vaccinated for Covid. I assume that a fair amount of people who have had Covid have also been vaccinated, so there may be some overlap; but if the real number of people who have had Covid (and thus have natural immunity) is closer to 20%, we're looking at a number of close to 75% of the population either having had Covid or been vaccinated. Maybe that means there is still a way to go before the virus plays itself out, but I can't imagine we will see another brutal wave like we saw last winter.
