While Neto was posting, I edited the previous post. The "://" was causing the problem. I deleted those, but adding the "https" also works.

The trial of Mark Gooch is being broadcast on YouTube.
Subsequent days of the trial are on separate videos. I understand it is ongoing. I expect that the conclusion to the trial will be worth watching particularly if/when Sasha’s family speaks in court.

I would have to agree. I have to wonder why he didn't plead. Maybe the offer was so bad he had nothing to lose by taking it to trial.appleman2006 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 04, 2021 5:12 pm Watched the trial today. And Wow. I watched various videos from last week. I am amazed at the cell phone technology used to track people. Also sickened and saddened by the exchanges between him and his brothers. I have to wonder how wounded these boys were, by the Mennonite Church.appleman2006 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 04, 2021 5:12 pm Watched the trial today. And Wow. After watching some of this trial, I began to wonder what makes an attorney represent a likely criminal.
This is what I learned. Which is not the most pleasant thing to learn...

Most defense attorneys (like maybe 80% of them) are public defenders. Because most criminals are poor. They get whatever clients they are assigned.Ernie wrote: ↑Mon Oct 04, 2021 8:22 pm After watching some of this trial, I began to wonder what makes an attorney represent a likely criminal.

I had a friend from college who became an attorney and then public defender for about 10 years. I asked him once what percentage of his clients were innocent. He said he didn't think he ever actually had one who was completely innocent. But very frequently they aren't necessarily guilty of all the charges that they face. He says often he had clients who did something illegal and the DA would throw a whole bunch of charges at them, often to try to force a plea, and as a defense attorney much of his job was bargaining the charges down to those that actually matched the crime.
He also told me that the huge majority of cases were drug or substance abuse related. Nearly all of them. Either (1) outright drug charges for possession or dealing, (2) crimes like burglary or car theft to fuel a drug habit, or (3) domestic violence or general violence fueled by drugs and alcohol. He said it was a rare case that didn't have some connection to drugs or alcohol. Rich defendants often do financial crimes that aren't linked to drugs. But they get private attorneys. Public defenders spend their lives basically working in the front lines of the drug war.

Goodness. Based on this line of thinking, one would imagine that violence, burglary, theft, and domestic violence wouldn't exist if drugs and alcohol didn't exist, or if they were legal.Ken wrote: ↑Mon Oct 04, 2021 9:22 pmHe also told me that the huge majority of cases were drug or substance abuse related. But wait! Alcohol used to be illegal. Then it was made legal again in the 1930s. And now, lots of drugs are legal or decriminalised. In Oregon, basically all drugs are decriminalised.
Has Oregon become some kind of panacea where burglary, car thefts, and domestic violence don't exist anymore?

Substance abuse has NOTHING to do with whether the substance is legal or illegal. Patrol the homeless encampments in Portland and survey how many of them are suffering from various forms of substance abuse that make them basically unemployable. Often it is alcohol. And when you have fallen out of society to that extent, about the only thing left to survive is petty crime of various types.Josh wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 4:28 pmGoodness. Most of the violence in Portland and elsewhere in the US is gang related. How many gangs do you know of that have no connection to drug use and drug dealing? And what percentage of domestic violence do you think is fueled by alcohol?
Cases like this one where Mark Gooch doesn’t appear to have any drug or alcohol issues (at least none that have been reported) are actually somewhat unusual in the court dockets.
