So if Jesus said His followers will have tribulation and we are not, what kind of follower does this make us ? Or is this a statement made to a select group at this time?
Yes, we have tribulations in this sinful world sometimes. When your children are killed, when your family is fighting in court, when disabilities overwhelm a family member, these feel like tribulations. We will be opposed, get sick, and die. It's the state of the world until Christ returns.
And what this verse promises is that through it all in Christ we have peace. Reminds me of that Andre Crouch song 'Through it All'. One of my favourites

You are referring to what is referred to as "the great tribulation" (as stated in Revelation 7). correct? Not tribulations in our lives that Jesus said we will have- what's commonly referred to as the 7 year tribulation.
It seems close but it really depends on your eschatology preference.
Revelation 7
13 Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, “Who are these arrayed in pwhite robes, and where did they come from?”

14 And I said to him, 2“Sir, you know.”

So he said to me, q“These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and rwashed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Some translations say "great tribulation" rather than "the great tribulation." Maybe Neto or Bootstrap could weigh in on which is the better translation choice.
