The withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan

Re: The withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan
I am fairly confident we aren’t getting very accurate news reporting out of Afghanistan. I repeated my anecdote from what someone (who does read some news) told me they saw in The Guardian.

It may be helpful to wait to comment on matters until there is more real knowledge of what is happening.

Unless you go there personally, how do you intend to gain real knowledge?

Re: The withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan
The most recent news reports were that the US military used drones to remotely take out an ISIS car bomb that was headed to the airport. The subsequent explosions of the car bomb on the street killed innocent bystanders, mostly a nearby family who were getting into their own car.
I'm not sure what else the US military should have done. The ISIS suicide bomber who killed 170 at the airport was just wearing a suicide vest. This car bomb was many times larger and could have killed hundreds had it gotten through to the airport where there are crowds milling about. Sometimes in war there are no good choices, only less bad ones.

Might be time to let the Afghanis decide how to deal with this. We’ve been there for 20 years and haven’t helped the situation.Ken wrote: ↑Mon Aug 30, 2021 1:53 pm The most recent news reports were that the US military used drones to remotely take out an ISIS car bomb that was headed to the airport. They were trying to car-bomb American targets at the airport not the Taliban HQ. Or are you that trusting of the Taliban and their capabilities to think they can properly secure the evacuation zone and protect the lives of US soldiers and evacuees without US help? When we do wrap up and leave in short order it will be their problem.Josh wrote: ↑Mon Aug 30, 2021 2:05 pmMight be time to let the Afghanis decide how to deal with this. I would also given greater than even odds that the Taliban and US military are currently cooperating on intelligence against ISIS and that Taliban might even be directing the US military where to strike.

Which is even more disturbing. We need to just get out of the region and stop messing with it.Ken wrote: ↑Mon Aug 30, 2021 3:13 pmThey were trying to car-bomb American targets at the airport not the Taliban HQ. Other counties are evacuating their people okay like the UK - America is really incompetent here.

Again, I am not part of the group who has been there for 20 years and I avoid telling the government what it should do. The last US military planes have supposedly just left.

No, I encourage you to read what is happening before commenting. Both the right and left are reporting the following so it is not hard to get the information.
3 Britons died in the ISIS attack. 13 Americans. And about 154 others.
