Dahrendorf argued that conflicts (for instance, of interests) are normal, and that our problem is rather conflict denial, conflict avoidance and conflict suppression. This is normally done by denouncing people who speak about the conflict and support one side of it, telling that they are just creating the conflict and calling them troublemakers.
Dahrendorf's father was, as a lawyer, involved in the early labour movement, and what Dahrendorf had in mind was particularly the (Christian) conservative habit to see labour movementers simply as troublemakers and hoping for a government which would stop the trouble (which led them to support National Socialism as the solution which would make all conflicts between employers and employees disappear).

i believe your use of “we” refers to Christians, maybe Christians on this forum? maybe Anabaptists on this forum? or other?
this thread’s subject line refers to MN, so, maybe “we” refers to posting MN members?

for me, conflict on this forum is a strange thing. :?
on one hand, i deeply dislike it. sometimes i become so hurt or frustrated i just want to run away and forget i ever read it.
some members have acted on this and have left to not return. some have left and return. some take breaks and return. i’ve done this. not recently. altho i think about it. for my benefit and others’.

“the strange thing” being, for me ..
conflict brings out some of THE BEST personal explanations and defenses of Christianity and conservative Anabaptism/conservative Mennonites that can be found. depth that doesn’t often come up among those in agreement or general agreement.

of course, i empathize that these treasures often result out of pain or frustration. i’m sorry about that.
but, the treasures are so valuable .. how else? where else?? it’s a conundrum.

further, the persons in direct conflict often do not appear to resolve anything. so that’s frustrating.
but, other readers benefit! sometimes exponentially. (i attest to this.)

it’s not us, it’s the Holy Spirit that determines outcomes. the Holy Spirit does not fail. 8-)

Isaiah 55:11
https://biblehub.com/isaiah/55-11.htm
10For just as rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return without watering the earth, making it bud and sprout, and providing seed to sow and food to eat,

11so My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please, and it will prosper where I send it.

12You will indeed go out with joy and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.…

When i’m in my right mind thinking about it (not often enough)
it can seem almost comical (in a deeply humbling way) how easy it is to get caught up in the moment, feeling either success or failure,
when, think of Jesus Christ Himself! How often rejected, when ALL He has to offer is unblemished Truth!

so. how can “we” believers complain, or be discouraged (when others do not understand, or even make an attempt)?
in this perspective, i hope and pray capable others are not discouraged.

remember Jesus, and, trust the Holy Spirit. if what we share is Truth, Truth will not fail.

.. if we are faithful believers, and wrong, then we should want to be corrected and not continue in error. a time for joy. :D

i DO NOT intend to say conflict is always good.
however, good/godliness can result from conflict, and, all results may not be immediately known. a human frailty is putting too much weight on the power of self+now, rather than trust+faith in God, Our Father, and His timing.

Let's discuss. And while we discuss, can we please avoid insulting each other, directly or indirectly, aggressively or passive-aggressively? Let's not discuss who is to blame, let's try to describe the problem and possible solutions.

But MennoNet.com seems to be losing its value.

I have struggled myself the past year or so with how I respond. I take this as a time for myself also. How can we grow, hear the person, but not retaliate for the insult. How can we see the person behind the post?
I have sensed hostility just for expressing contrary opinions. What's the point of an internet forum where everyone agrees with each other all the time?

The goal is to be able to disagree w/o becoming hostile, or responding in personal attacks, or arguing w/o listening.

The short answer to this thread is - no, I don't think we can make MN less hostile.

There are certain factions here that are dead-set against freedom of religion and belief and practice for anyone who doesn't agree with them 100%, and those factions currently feel very emboldened since mainstream society seems to be aligned with them. They delight in repeating over and over that those of us who are faithful Mennonites are in the minority, mainstream society doesn't care about us, and also mock and malign our religion as if it's something that isn't a "real religion". An example of this is our shared belief against abortion; we believe life begins at conception. This is universal to all conservative Mennonites.

I really do not see any way to reduce this hostility. Virtually every debate or discussion comes down to this. And I'm not even sure why we would expect it to be any other way. The path of following Christ is a narrow way, and few there be that find it.

I'm not really part of this thread but have been following it loosely. I must be reading all the wrong threads... but I don't see this. Just because someone has a different viewpoint or opinion, doesn't immediately make them "hostile." Again, maybe I'm not reading the right threads.

A fact is information minus emotion.
An opinion is information plus experience.
Ignorance is an opinion lacking information.
Stupidity is an opinion that ignores fact.

Having a different opinion is not being "hostile". When expressing a different opinion leads to questioning the knowledge, intelligence, or morality of the other, then things start feeling more hostile. This happens too often for my liking.

I agree and how we word our disagreements should consider 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you'. For instance, I could say 'you are wrong' or I could say 'my way of looking at this is'. Or instead of saying 'the scripture clearly says', we say 'my understanding of this scripture is'. One can be totally convinced they have the truth on a subject but how they share that belief matters. We all 'see through a glass darkly' in various areas.

Responses can be either respecting one another or letting the ego/flesh take over. And that is my view, YMMV, and you could be right and me wrong. I'm pretty sure this has been true somewhere, sometime. :lol:

We all 'see through a glass darkly;’ in various areas.

https://biblehub.com/kjv/1_corinthians/13-12.htm
“For now we see through a glass, darkly;
but then face to face:
now I know in part;
but then shall I know even as also I am known.”

no diplomacy in 1Cor. just a statement of fact. which is at once humbling and reassuring. :)
