While I have read "By Thy Words" and chuckled some and agree with much of the critique. I have misgivings about the public "take-down" though considering the larger picture I am also not certain it shouldn't be done. I do feel for the actual writers, who in all likelihood were not professionals, but were doing the best they could...and therefore some awkward wording/descriptions could perhaps be overlooked.

I haven't felt comfortable participating in the comments.

In all likelihood the material was all severely edited to sound exactly the same as all the other material printed by the same people.

I knew of someone who wrote material for Rod and Staff. I was like wow, I didn't know you were so interested in (topic). I figured the person must have written it out of a passion for (topic). The person actually didn't have any special interest or knowledge about (topic). They were given a very tightly drafted outline and had to keep reworking it to fit the R+S criteria. There was no humanity to the piece. It was all very mechanical and cold.

I think in the past few days some stuff from Family Life was posted on Facebook. We used to get that years ago. I forgot how biased it was... the wife was always portrayed as the good parent and the husband was always the lazy bum. Maybe I read all the wrong articles.

We still get the Family Life and although I don't always agree with some of their content, I do enjoy their stories and articles. I can't say that the characterization of the wife being portrayed as the good parent and the husband a lazy bum, still holds true. One good thing, is that they are addressing sexual abuse in some of their articles.

I must remember all the wrong articles. Been some years since we got it. I only remember they never cast the mother in a bad light, but the father was often in the wrong.

You're thinking of "The Berenstain Bears" books.

It does seem so often that groups tend to direct their teaching mostly to the husband or mostly to the wife, dire warnings attached. It sure would be good if teachers and preachers would give a biblically balanced view of marriage and family, God's commands and blessings included. I'm not referring to these mentioned, because I'm not familiar with either--just what I've seen and heard over my long life. :)

I've sat under the preaching over the years of ministers that seemed to have a "hang up" on certain topics. And its usually some hidden issue they struggle with themselves. And its typically sexual in nature, sadly.

And that's very sad, because the sin touches so many lives.
