West Coast Fire Thread

Things that are not part of politics happening presently and how we approach or address it as Anabaptists.

Sounds like the paid firefighters shouldn’t be.

Professional firefighters took a “can’t-do” approach in Estacada, said Mike Platz, a local engineer. “I hate to say that. They told the citizens why they couldn’t do stuff. So the citizens said, OK, then we will.”
Nolan Bechtel, a leader in the local Mennonite community, said it seemed to him that a mild breeze from the north was actively pushing against the east wind. “It was the hand of God,” he said.

I can still catch a whiff of smoke smell when I open my office door in town. Some smoke high in the atmosphere. Air quality is considered moderate.
Current numbers:
Lionshead: 204,000 acres, 35% contained
Beachie Creek: 192,000 acres, 59% contained
Riverside: 138,000 acres, 37% contained
Holiday Farm: 173,000 acres, 70% contained
Archie Creek: 131,000 acres, 81% contained
Slater/Devil 154,000 acres, 50% contained
Brattain: 50,000 acres, 95% contained

Maybe our churches would grow if we all became fire fighters.

"I owe so many thank-you's. I could spend the rest of my life saying thank you and I'd still have people to thank," he says, adding that he's particularly grateful for members of Porter Mennonite Church who helped. "I'm going to shake all of their hands and join their religion."

Fire season in Central Oregon again. Smoke in the air.
We watch the Grandview fire start on Sunday, its about 30 miles away and now at about 6,000 acres, still burning away. North of us about the same distance the Rattlesnake fire is at about 5,500 acres. And in Southern Oregon, the Bootleg fire is now the largest active fire in the country at just over 200,000 acres.
Yesterday a small, fast moving fire broke out just north and straight upwind of my brothers farm. Quickly burned about 10 acres, moving fast towards his ripe unharvested crop in his field, before it was controlled by the fire departments. Would have been a real disaster if that crop would have been lost. The fire came to within 1,000 feet of his field.

We're in a drought on the west coast and there's already some nasty fires. It's going to be another bad year unfortunately.

Here in Ohio people keep saying they wish we could send the west our rain. Weve been getting some almost dsily, at times too much. When customers complain i gently say "that is why Ohio is so green and beautiful, and there are a lot of states that would be very grateful for our rain"
When I first moved to Ohio from Southern California in 1992, alliance could not understand why I would do such a thing. Through The years they've come to appreciate where they live more and more and now they would think I would be nuts for going back. However after long winters they tend to hope for perfection for a few months.

It’s been really smoky the last couple days here. Few wild fires about an hour north, and the wind is blowing the smoke here.
This afternoon we had a small thunder storm and tonight we can see a new fire on the mountains to the west. Can actually see the forest fires actual flames from the living room.

Produce farmers here in the East are saying that haze in the atmosphere from wildfires in the western US and Canada has been causing tomato crops to ripen more slowly. Apparently clear direct sunlight is one of the needed factors. Could you please put out your fires so we can get our tomato sauce. Local tomatoes are about 1.5 - 2X higher in price than they typically would be by now.

‘Big Tomato’ is behind all of it. Firefighters are crisis actors. California produces the most tomatoes and fires. Alex Jones puts tomato ketchup on all his food. And some tomatoes are the same color as fire. Sheep don’t eat tomatoes. Sheep ranchers and cattle ranchers war with each other over government grazing rights on the burnt land. Blood and tomatoes are red. Red is the color of communism. Now the cattle can’t eat. Communist starve people, no tomatoes. China has more smokers than any other country. Smoke slows tomato development.
It’s all clear as can be, it’s all connected. Don’t be a sheeple, it’s all right in front of us to see.
