Discouraging Artistic Ability

Re: Encouraging artistic ability?
When you said "The body can be erotic, but it can also be utilitarian..." I thought in context that you were suggesting that DaVinci's naked drawings were strictly utilitarian, drawn to help him understand and convey the details of the human body.Sliceitup wrote: ↑Sat Jul 03, 2021 1:33 pmCould you explain this a bit more? I’m not sure what you’re trying to say.ken_sylvania wrote: ↑Sat Jul 03, 2021 12:25 am
…suggest that even if they were strictly utilitarian to him, they have given a very different impression to others.
On the other hand, the experts claim that that dozens of his drawings are "borderline pornographic" or "erotic." It is claimed that he used a male prostitute as the model for a bust. Whether or not this is true, I really don't know as I have not studied his work. But apparently some of his drawings were much different than Netters anatomy drawings.

Welcome to MennoNet in 2021, where someone arguing for pornographic art is the soup du jour.

"Need"?
Artists certainly find it helps in drawing humans in clothing.
But, more importantly, humans are created "in the image and likeness" of God and he found this creation "very good". To me, drawing what God has created may be more glorifying to the Creator than drawing what humans have created.

To misquote a Scripture reference: "What God has covered, let no man uncover."

Re: Encouraging artistic ability?
I wonder what others here make of the story of Adam and Eve as it wasn't until they sinned did they use things to cover their nakedness. Is the manifestation of sinless perfection, nudity ? Sounds like a good base to start up a scriptural nudist community.
Just being silly but I do find it interesting how one of the first responses to recognizing right from wrong was for Adam and Eve to cover up their nakedness.
