What have we accomplished?
I see Jeriah's wife out and about once in a while. I am always filled with pity how they cinched her tighter into her "marriage" by making her renew her wedding vows to him.
As I recall, this was done so he could renew his marriage vows and then claim he was going to be faithful to his wife going forwards.

Personally I believe the marriage bond is broken after this degree of sexual immorality.

In the short window of time between their rushed return home from Haiti and his confession to local law enforcement, their home congregation performed a vow renewal for Jeriah and his wife.

Their church also printed up "pray for" cards (similar to what missionaries give out for people to hang on their refrigerator). I wasn't the only one who was shocked by how sanitized the whole thing is made to seem. No mention of praying for victims.
Two years later an this entire circus act just keep getting more and more bizarre... :(

In fairness, this is one congregation which, at this point, finds itself in little fellowship with many of the plain people around them.

Nope. But their people are extremely loyal and come off as very right compared to everyone else.

And being a prison wife is not going to be fun.

I've been assumed, on visit, to be an inmate mother, or even wife. But it doesn't bother me what other visitors think, plus if they ask, I can set them straight. But being the wife of a pedophile really carries a load of shame, especially when even other criminals look down on the husband. And that's just one layer of hardship involved in being a "woman in the shadows."

I agree with you.

Their church doesn't see it that way. They rejoiced that he "repented" and over the "healing" of their marriage. Their marriage takes precedent over all else. Absolutely everything else.

So... did you want her to divorce him? to say he is a worthless person? To get remarried? What exactly do you think she should have done? What would Jesus have wanted her to do?

I am not a fan of vow renewals in general. In this case it was tacky and smacked of control. They were already married. I didn't say get a divorce (though certainly I can see where the "exception clause" could work here), but recementing everything in the midst of the hoopla was in very poor taste, in my opinion.

My advice to her would have been to divorce him, change her name back to her maiden name, and start her life over someplace new. That doesn't necessarily mean seek out a new husband. But rather, focus first on herself and her children. But of course that is something that should be her decision, not that of her congregation or anyone else.

No one is a completely "worthless person". But some people do forfeit the unconditional love that marriage requires through their actions. I would think that being a serial sexual predator over decades (along with the endless lies and deceptions that requires) would fall into such a category. He probably wasn't just betraying his vows by molesting children. He was probably constantly and deliberately lying to her over decades about what he was doing, where he was going, etc. etc. That is just as much of a betrayal of trust.
