Plans to travel to see the wonders of the True North were due an avalanche of celebration on June 21, when the U.S.-Canada border was scheduled to open, but a recent conversation between U.S. President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is casting an ominous shadow on that possibility.

Ever since the March 2020 ban on non-essential travel was instituted in accordance with other pandemic-related shutdowns, Americans have been restricted from leisure travel north of the border. That ban has since been updated on a month-to-month basis, testing the patience of Canadian businesses that rely heavily on tourism.

So, what’s the hold up?

While America continues its return to normality amid a continuous surge in vaccine distribution, the picture has looked vastly different for Canadians.

Current numbers, according to vaccination data from Johns Hopkins University, show that just over 44 percent of U.S. citizens, or nearly 145 million people, have been fully vaccinated. These data are vastly disproportionate compared to the approximately 12 percent of fully vaccinated Canadians, a number that falls well below the 75 percent rate Trudeau previously set as a criteria to open the border.

Still, there are some signs of hope, as Canada recently announced an imminent relaxation of quarantine requirements for Canadians returning home from international travel. Restrictions have also been loosened for National Hockey League playoff series involving teams from both countries.

But with uncertainty abounding and the June 21 deadline only a week away, all signs are pointing toward travel delays lasting well into the summer. .. ..

I'm hoping to travel to Nova Scotia before we move from Maine. Seeing that the border is opening Monday might change some of our plans for the next couple weeks.

Were you in touch with MD member (CRamsay?) in PEI/Ohio? Will you see him?
i’ve lost touch, have no idea if he/they’ve been in Ohio or PEI during the pandemic. He was a first responder.

BlueNoseAl? .. did he get his duck farm? .. Robert may know.

(i wonder) if the Mennonites, or Amish, from Ontario that were going to move to (Nova Scotia, PEI?) acted on their plans, and how they are doing.

Is Iceland still planned? :)

Safe travels. :D

Ancestors (on both sides of my family) come from Nova Scotia. I want to check out the place where my mother's mother and father's grandfather grew up. along the West coast. I also want to go to the archive where there is a folio of records and writings fromr Major Samuel Chesley, who settled the family there in 1759.

The Iceland trip is off for medical reasons (not me, someone else in the family). We'll fill the time with some camping and fishing! I want to take my son and brother for a trip to one of the big lakes here in Maine for a few days.

I am sorry you will not see Iceland. That was one of my favorite travels in my youth.

i’m sorry about Iceland.
 i hope you find treasures from Samuel Chesley!

i have a dead-end on my father’s side i’d really like to break through. his paternal grandfather is as far back as i’ve found, and not much there. his mother’s side goes back to Charlemagne, and includes early 1600’s Nova Scotia Mi’kmaqs. so much on her side. even Huguenots. and Mormons. Frans Graf.

i have Quakers on both sides, so far, no indication the sides knew each other.

i have quite a bit on my mother’s father’s side. zero on her mother’s father’s side, including assurity we have his correct name!
my dear grandmother, born in 1899, was raised without knowing her father; in 1899 public shame, but, thankfully, raised with her loving maternal extended family. (i’ve found, she was sometimes recorded in census records as a child of her grandparents, sister to her mother.) there was little or no family talk of this taboo history.

after a lonely childhood, she married a wonderful man, they had 9 children in humble circumstances. The Great Depression was hard.
i remember them as possibly the 2 happiest people i’ve ever met. they exemplified joy+gratitude in all circumstances.

they LOVED their family which gave them many grandchildren and great grchildren. she once told me about how lonely she was as a child. living in the country. isolated. she did not get into details with me (as a child) about social rejections of the times.
today, children without fathers present do not raise eyebrows.

i was told my teen grgrandmother was working as a servant in a South Bend, Indiana wealthy household, became pregnant by a son, his mother would not bear the thought of a marriage, the young man was sent overseas. i have a name but have had not confirmed any connection to him or his family. unknown. i’ve searched many times over years. nothing. my grandmother wanted so much to find him, to introduce him to his 9 grandchildren, she was certain he would be pleased. she told me this. her heart for it was palpable. it did not happen. it’s possible, the mystery will one day be solved.

but, aside from that, getting beyond my father’s named paternal grandfather would be very welcome. :D
he thought Germany, possibly Stuttgart. nothing confirmed. (i have confirmed some of his other thoughts on his family history in Pennsylvania and Virginia.) so .. ?? maybe .. :)

i have found connections to Ireland, Scotland, France, Switzerland, Scandinavia, even Nova Scotia, my parents were unaware.
boy. would they be surprised! i wish i could talk with them. they would be interested and in disbelief. like me!

Blessings for your journeys. :D

We may yet see Iceland, if that is the Lord’s will this Spring. We have shifted our big family gathering to Christmas in PA. We planned the Iceland trip around the prognosis of my being in steep decline after September, but it looks like I’ll make it to next summer.

Flexiblity is a good thing.
