Will hospital beds and equipment continue to decline per capita? Or will real changes be as durable as the loss of freedom? Will we make large scientific breakthroughs in virology? Will we be actually better prepared? That is what I wonder.
Or, will we be stuck with all the costs and no benefits?

I expect we will be prepared somewhat better. I just wish we could dispense with the government overreach on things of dubious value and society placebo nonsense.
What specific freedoms do you think you have permanently lost as a result of this pandemic?
The freedom to fly in a commercial airline without wearing a mask or carrying a proof of vaccination (despite the fact that scientists have no idea whether vaccinated people can spread the virus).
I’m taxing to the runway as I type this. The lady next to me is wearing two masks.

Well... if you had someone who wanted to tax the runway... I'd take his mask too. (okay politely ask for it, I'm non-resistant)

She was doing the same thing to the runway as I was. Come to think of it, maybe she was mask taxing. Maybe I should have asked her if she wanted mine too.

Much like the Patriot Act, which was supposed to be temporary, lots of temporary things seem to become permanent.

One of them which is very disturbing is the government giving unelected bureaucrats the power to shut down any business, church, or school they want for any reason.

https://fee.org/articles/12-million-chi ... sis-finds/
“The COVID-19 pandemic and restrictive mitigation policies have forced millions of children worldwide into poverty, with devastating effects on their access to education, nutrition, shelter, sanitation, and overall likelihood of survival,” the Collateral Global research team reports.

They find that:

Global child poverty has increased 15% to hit 1.2 billion children living on less than $2/day
Disruptions to access to healthcare, vaccinations, nutrition, etc. could mean that up to 1.2 million additional children die before their fifth birthday
A whopping 7 to 9.7 million children who missed school during the pandemic will never return
Up to 100 million children will never reach basic reading proficiency

Gainesville, FL (June 16, 2021) – A group of parents in Gainesville, FL, concerned about potential harms from masks, submitted six face masks to a lab for analysis. The resulting report found that five masks were contaminated with bacteria, parasites, and fungi, including three with dangerous pathogenic and pneumonia-causing bacteria. No viruses were detected on the masks, although the test is capable of detecting viruses.

The analysis detected the following 11 alarmingly dangerous pathogens on the masks:

• Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumonia)

• Mycobacterium tuberculosis (tuberculosis)

• Neisseria meningitidis (meningitis, sepsis)

• Acanthamoeba polyphaga (keratitis and granulomatous amebic encephalitis)

• Acinetobacter baumanni (pneumonia, blood stream infections, meningitis, UTIs— resistant to antibiotics)

• Escherichia coli (food poisoning)

• Borrelia burgdorferi (causes Lyme disease)

• Corynebacterium diphtheriae (diphtheria)

• Legionella pneumophila (Legionnaires' disease)

• Staphylococcus pyogenes serotype M3 (severe infections—high morbidity rates)

• Staphylococcus aureus (meningitis, sepsis)

Half of the masks were contaminated with one or more strains of pneumonia-causing bacteria. One-third were contaminated with one or more strains of meningitis-causing bacteria. One-third were contaminated with dangerous, antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens. In addition, less dangerous pathogens were identified, including pathogens that can cause fever, ulcers, acne, yeast infections, strep throat, periodontal disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and more.

The face masks studied were new or freshly-laundered before wearing and had been worn for 5 to 8 hours, most during in-person schooling by children aged 6 through 11. One was worn by an adult. A t-shirt worn by one of the children at school and unworn masks were tested as controls. No pathogens were found on the controls. Proteins found on the t-shirt, for example, are not pathogenic to humans and are commonly found in hair, skin, and soil.

New cases are still dropping a bit, but the averages have kind of flattened out.

Image

300+ people are still dying from COVID every day but that number is still dropping nicely.

Image

It looks like those who really wanted to get vaxxed in the US have mostly gotten their shots. The number of people per 100 to get vaccinated per day peaked out back in April.
