So, it would seem that this Current Event thread is viewed by Anabaptists in the same way that non-believers would consider this topic. Not sure this was the original intent of what this specific forum was to be used for. If we were discussing the need for a believer to be honest in every way, that might be different. I would think a more Anabaptist perspective would be Dr. Fauci needs our prayers not our criticisms.
We are also called to bring light to darkness. Being informed of how the powers around us use and misuse their positions does not compromise our faith. It is an exercise of it. Speaking the truth in love. Speaking what is good in building up of the body.
Amen. Ephesians 5:11: have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.
All things hidden must come to light. This affected the entire world and it could happen again and Christians need to know the right way to respond. I've said many times how I work with a public throughout this pandemic. The fear in a lot of the customers was terrible if someone got close to them they would stick their arm way out in front of him like back off I've never seen such fear in all my life because people were looking at each other as walking death threats to one another while they shopped. I saw verbal fight attacks between people before Mass were required, I saw people chew each other out. Getting to the source of this and finding out all the facts on this is essential and being a Christian doesn't mean we bury our head in the sand
Here is how I see it and I'm open to consider your view of these kind of threads.
First, that text Eph 5:11 is about sins amongst believers in a church. We are not to 'bury our head in the sand' rather we are to deal with sin in the church in a uncompromising and loving way. As Gal 5:9 puts it, 'a little leven leveneth the whole lump'. In 1 Cor 5:12,13 we read 'What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13 God will judge those outside.' So, this tells me that whatever unsaved people are doing is none of my business. They are sinners and will in various ways do what unregenerate people do, they sin as they do not have a reborn spirit.
Our mission to the unsaved should be an attitude of 'but for the grave of God, there go I'. I believe our response as Christians is to 'speak the truth in love' and that truth is that Jesus came to save us from our sins. He is the Truth, the Life, the Way.
Imo, even arguing over what is true and what is not regarding a sinner's sinning is futile and most often, as can be seen here, causes arguments amongst believers. We know we all have sinned but for the believer we have been given the enabling power of the Holy Spirit to overcome our sins. This is our internal war of the flesh versus the spirit and can live victorious lives if we walk in the Spirit. We are not at war with the unsaved. They are doing what comes natural to them.
I believe our way to respond to pandemics, wars, disasters of all kinds, etc is the same as it always has been for a believer. Let the light of God shine through us in good deeds and the fruit of the Spirit. Allow the Spirit to rule in our lives that shows the current events of this life doesn't rattle us and we have peace and joy as we live in a Kingdom way of life. I often fall short of this belief as I war with my flesh, yet this is my conviction and as Max would put it YMMV.
Bringing light to darkness reminds me of this old song the Back to the Bible Quartet used to sing. The chorus goes like this -
What you are speaks so loud
That the world can't hear what you say
They're looking at your walk
Not listening to your talk
They're judging by your actions every day
Don't believe you'll deceive
By claiming what you've never known
They'll accept what they see
They know you to be
They'll judge from your life alone.
A lot of truth to consider here. When an unsaved person logs unto this forum, what are they seeing ? Or does that matter ?
