In the general population, I also think that the number of people who have recovered from Covid is a factor. But vaccinations make a real difference, especially among the most vulnerable populations. Until recently, nursing homes accounted for about 1/3 of Covid deaths.

That chart seems to suggest something other than vaccines is at work in reducing nursing home deaths. It is fairly well established that the death curve has generally been lagging the case count curve by a couple weeks. In order to believe that the decline in deaths is primarily associated with vaccination, one would have to conclude either that giving the vaccine to already sick people helps to keep them from dying, as the folks who died between Dec. 20th and Jan. 4th were almost certainly already sick by Dec. 20th. Very few vaccines were actually administered in nursing homes before the end of the year, which would suggest that vaccines could hardly have had any measurable impact before Jan. 15th at the absolute earliest, and even that early of a date is probably a stretch.

And, as we might recall, Dr. Fauci says we wouldn't be seeing a measurable impact from the vaccine this early anyway.

According to the Daily Wire, a CDC study says that more than 73% of Americans who died from COVID-19 were obese or overweight.

Seems the predicted numbers are falling below the threshold of deaths. I wonder if we will see this continue as Covid deaths continue to plummet. Those who would have died this year may have died early but would have succumbed to whatever co-morbidity they were struggling with by this or next year.

Not sure where to get daily numbers anymore. Weekly should do fine as the numbers continue to drop as expected as the vaccines are taking affect.

IMO to claim this is a result of the vaccine is like the rooster taking credit for the sunrise because he crowed.

I also heard that 9 out of 10 hospitalizations from Covid were Vitamin D deficient. We have been taking multivitamins for months now and none of us have contracted Covid. Not sure if that is the reason, but I see no downside of a daily vitamin.

I think it suggests we are hitting herd immunity. The vaccines help speed that process. I think we are seeing that effect. Indiana is down to vaccinating 50 years and above. Soon, it should be open to all. I would think that in a matter of a month or two, mask mandates will disappear here too.

To what do you attribute the reduction in deaths if not the vaccines?

The disease has run its course. We are reaching herd immunity. Could the vaccine hasten that? Possibly. But every pandemic of the past has has eventfully" burned itself out" either by reaching herd immunity because there are no more susceptible hosts or we have learned how to contain the disease and sometimes that has been vaccines.

I can assure you that the vaccine is having an impact in reducing the deaths among nursing home patients. "Run its course" and " burned itself out" means that all or most of the nursing home patients that were susceptible have died. The fact is that many, many nursing homes with susceptible populations experienced few or no deaths at all (because of masking, isolation and other practices), and with their residents vaccinated they can open up to visitors without risking exposure to the virus (as they are doing at my wife's Memory Care facility).

I don't know how you can objectively look at the graph that was posted and conclude that the vaccine is not responsible for the reduction in deaths among nursing home patients. Are you suggesting that it is mere coincidence that nursing home deaths began to decline precisely when the vaccine started to be deployed to these patients?
