Two fellows started farming and wanted a donkey to plow with. They felt the price of the donkey was too much. The old time farmer they were dealing with said he could sell them a donkey egg much cheaper and they could hatch it themselves. He sold them a watermelon. The 2 took turns carrying it on the way home. Then they sat under a shade tree to rest. Suddenly the melon started rolling down the hill. They jumped up and ran after it.

"Catch it! That's our donkey egg!" On down the hill the melon hit a rock and split open. A rabbit that was behind the rock took off. Now the 2 men ran frantically trying to catch their baby donkey. Finally, all out of breath and sweating, the one said, "Hold it, hold it. Just let that thing go. We don't wanna plow that fast anyhow."

A year later, they came back to the spot where the seeds of the watermelon sprouted and grew many many more donkey eggs. The picked them all and sold a very large amount of donkey eggs to other people in the city. But the kept a half a dozen to hatch for themselves.
They sat on the donkey eggs day after day, but alas. They were not ever able to get a donkey to hatch as that first donkey egg did.
