What does "separation of church and state" mean?

According to one source,
former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Penn.) said it is worth noting that the words “separation of church and state” do not appear in the U.S. Constitution but are cited in the constitution of the former Communist Soviet Union.
In the United States the only idea was that the state does not interfere with the church. Nothing about that the Church can't be involved in things like lobbying the State, sponsoring a partisan candidate, etc.

Whether it is the right thing for the Church to do is a theological question. And the Church as an organization (a particular denomination for example) would relate differently to government than an individual Christian.

I'm still a little mystified... but I think I have an inkling at what's bothering you... I think about it some more and maybe respond.
i appreciate your effort to try to understand. i am also making an effort to try to understand, and to find words that can be understood.

Sorry, but this just has a partisan stench to it.
Well, I for one would be bothered by it.

I'm still mystified... what I wrote, nor my intentions remotely do this, "compare... Nickel Mines with...political upmanship"...
Here's a third time, in different wording again.
1. Post Nickel Mines, the Amish community (my county!) spoke and lived out a powerful witness to the world to the power of Jesus Christ and forgiveness and grace (a whole book was written about it Amish Grace - Donald Kraybill et al!)
2. That powerful witness, imo will be undermined or overshadowed, if the Amish, in general, are perceived to have hitched their wagon to trumpism...

That's all I'm saying; nothing more, nothing less. This'll be the last time I try to make it clear. If you read something else into that, then I give up. I know one thing for sure, I live a lot closer to that tragedy than you do. I have immediate family who live Next Door to victims of that tragedy and this or anything I wrote previously was meant to not impugn those family's continuing Christ-like witness. In fact, it's FOR them that I don't want to see their community get mixed up in trumpism.
Wow, I misspoke here... (Could moderators change or remove this post?) Either way, I meant to say this. I have immediate family who live Next Door to victims of that tragedy and this or anything I wrote previously was NOT meant to impugn those family's continuing Christ-like witness.

I have read all this with great interest, because those are problems I grapple with for a long time.
There is a general gut feeling that Christians ought not to be involved in partisan politics - but the arguments are somewhat unsatisfying. For a part it is simply a use of well-worn catchphrases ("separation of state and church", "two kingdoms") which need themselves to be specified, explained and reasoned.
Another part of the arguments is imho wrong, like the argument that you never must love your country or your nation. This would be correct if a country/nation is understood as an "idea" or an "institution"; but is certainly wrong if a country/nation is understood as "people".
The best motive for avoiding partisan politics is imho a gut feeling that Christians ought not to be involved in "power" or "force" or "coercion" - and in this gut feeling conservative Anabaptists are yet superior to practically all other Christian subgroups I have got to know (Quakers included).

That said, I propose some qualifications. Blunt partisanship - like in "Amish for Trump" - may be an error, but is by far not as destructive for the soul as a partisanship hidden behind a moral high ground. My example for that is the Interfaith Declaration against separation of immigrant families which was signed on by MC USA and published in June 18,2018. The moral outrage about child detention had begun in 2017, but photoes used as illustrations unintentionally showed that the practice was already in use 2014 (only under Obama no church had taken offence - nor will any church take offence under Biden/Harris, I suppose; they will simply avoid looking into that matter).

I myself will propose a new argument for why it is good to avoid partisan politics and be cautious about involvement into politics in general. But I will open a new topic for that.

i look forward to your new topic.

Frankly, the current expectation must be that career politicians and their fawning media will strictly control not only reporting, but micromanagement of language reported, as is already well in process.

Already, on the “forever” internet, so much is removed/“scrubbed.”
This new internet wherein we were FIRST told+warned, “whatever appears” will appear forever.

Already we witness, this is false. ^^
We understand, nothing disappears spontaneously, what disappears is chosen to disappear, what remains does so for predetermined reason, by those who benefit from what they choose.

At this point, the need to “copy+paste,” screen shot, or print, anything that might be of future interest - yet vulnerable to deliberately being scrubbed, arises.

“Forever”
When i was a young teen, my best friend’s mother wanted to warn we young girls about the fragility of romantic hearts. They are both passed away. My friend was said to have committed suicide, at 29. i never believed it, neither did my father. i won’t deliberate. i’ve never had answers. Not all murders are investigated/solved on earth.

But when we were young and tender, her mother warned us about the word, “forever.”
She told us (in human use) be prepared, “forever” can be a very short time!!

She warned,
“If someone tells you, ‘i will love you forever,’ forever may not last very long, at all.”

This was shocking to our young hearts. Not forgotten.

Some words belong to God.

So. In short order, the “forever internet” turns out to be not-forever, after all. :-|

i am grateful for this forum. i do not take free speech, free thought for granted.

there were times i feared MennoDiscuss would be shut down for content. i haven’t been as (nervous) about MN, but, the potential exists.

Was there a particular topic or thread that made you think this?

i wasn’t thinking of one when i posted. now that you ask, yes. discussions on homosexuals, and another, abortion, come to mind. pride. one is not to question the importance of pride.

interesting.
MN began in election-time 2016, i hadn’t really thought of that.
but, in fact, one result of that election was free-er discussion of various sins and crimes.

there are many who want to end that. at this time, it might not take them long at all.
and, they will be proud. pride is of tremendous importance to these energetic ones.

recent “pulling the plug” on POTUS and others, should be a chilling warning to everyone.

The only time I thought we'd be close was last year when the CAM thing broke. I thought for sure some wealthy Mennonites would have offered Robert a bajillion dollars to tank the forum. There was a lot of unsavory info wrapped up in that thread.

As far as government, I don't see them caring about MN. Maybe if we were some extremist website, then maybe.

True. The CAM threads were dangerous.
i didn’t think of Robert being bought off, or threatened, but, the attempt is not out of the question. we may never know, eh?

As for MD/MN, i take nothing for granted. One only has to hit the radar of some activist, then, “you’re it.” There are legal funds to support these lawsuits, as we have witnessed in small bakeries, tiny photography businesses, family inns, small town civil servant workers, a mother moving out of the U.S. with her biological child.

No corner too small. In fact, the small corners seem preferred!
The end goal is to establish legal precedent that will lead to bigger future legal wins.

Not just domestically. This exact pattern is exported overseas, into small/tiny countries that have little defense against wealthy determined activists. One after another.
Russia resists: Evil Russia. :-| Do you believe there is no connection??

(There is no current way to efficiently separate activists/lobbyists/special interests/billionaire busybodies from U.S. government.) If only. :)

Law schools have contributed to a lot of damage in our culture. A double edged sword.

Law to love
