Well, I know some ponds with pond scum that blocks sunlight.

No, you're all rightsteve-in-kville wrote:To be classified as a lake, there must be an area on the bottom that does not get sunlight. So, in a sense, its depth.Joy wrote:Volume?

Although I think most people doing the actual naming don't really know this so they just go by size. Just like the distinctions between streams, creeks, and rivers, which have some obscure technical distinctions that most people don't know either.

I remember studying up on that too. Has to do with how they are each fed and what they feed into, I think.

Yes: 1st order, 2nd order, 3rd order, 4th order etc. Rivers are usually 4th order or higher. But again, in real life they don't always follow the rules.steve-in-kville wrote:I remember studying up on that too. Has to do with how they are each fed and what they feed into, I think.
Like Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans isn't really a lake, it's an estuary. And we have a 400 ft. long river here in Oregon that wouldn't meet the scientific definition of a river but is still called one. The D River: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D_River

Ponds are wealthier. They have banks.steve-in-kville wrote:Without looking it up, does anyone know the difference between a lake and a pond?

Why are we talking about pond scum in my thread about fake Amish?

Somehow we went from 7-mountains theology to how DC doesn't have mountains, to geography in general to lakes then ponds then rivers and streams.Joy wrote:Um, it just popped up.mike wrote:Why are we talking about pond scum in my thread about fake Amish?
Maybe it had something to do with DC?
You gotta pay attention!

To bring it back a little... this just breaks my heart to see this... my heritage being wooed by conmen/women, grifters, heretics like Lance Wallnau and Paula White (see posting here: Amish for Trump) I hope Ernie's assessment that this is just a few rogues and fake Amish is true, but still this saddens me. Remember the world wide witness of the Amish after Nickel Mines? Well that'll all be forgotten or maybe is already, if this kind of public capitulation to worldly machinations becomes their new "witness"... hitching ones cart to people like Wallnau and White and their master(s) can't end well, imo.
