Gimme a break. Calling this a “constitutional strategy “ lets me know right where your head is.Robert wrote:WE do have a national strategy and the WHO guy said it had to be dealt with at a local level.Judas Maccabeus wrote:However, we have never done that, and have never had a coherent national strategy.
Our national strategy is that the states have to decide how they need to deal with it in their region because each is different. The Federal government provides the resources while states enact what they need. This is a very constitutional strategy.
A political strategy, not a public health one. It also shows where your heart is. Politics is more important than public health.
At one point the states were made to compete for resources. In another case our governor was criticized for cutting a deal for Korean test kits, when he could not get them through domestic supply channels.
The feds have not supplied the resources, and has caused dissent when states enacted what their elected officials felt correct, I will remind you of “Liberate Michigan.” Where did that lead.....to a plot to overthrow the government.
This would onl6 make sense in the alternate reality of whatever universe some people dwell.

Yes they have different climates. They also have different state flowers. What does that mean in terms of public health measures? What public health measures are appropriate for Georgia but inappropriate for Wisconsin? Or vice versa?Robert wrote:One is cold int he winter and one is warm in the winter. One has more sun and UV. And are those differences so drastic that a national approach is precluded and we need to have different state-by-state approaches?

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
I like the state by state approach. No sense for rural Arizona to be under all sorts of regulations that might make sense for mass transit NYC. Let Arizona tighten and loosen things as the virus spreads.
Do you also propose a global lock step response? Or only a national response? Same principle. No reason the UAE shouldn’t have enjoyed some latitude for a while in January before it was a problem for them. Or should have the whole world locked down in the exact same way and time frame as China did? Are we all expected to remain locked down 100% until every single populated area on earth is free of the virus?
No, I think we need some latitude at the state level.

If you do not have a national strategy you will be playing COVID wack a mole. Compare Canada, Germany and Australia with Brazil and the US. Get the difference?

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
A national strategy is not a lock-step, one-size-fits all strategy. It is simply the Federal government coming up with Federal guidelines, standards, and best practices for every situation. They have the expertise and resources (or at least used to before the CDC and FDA were politicized). NY doesn't apply the same standards to the NYC subways as it does to rural upstate NY. A coherent Federal strategy is the sort of thing that we would have had in any normal Republican or Democratic administration that was actually interested in curtailing the pandemic and getting the country back to normal.RZehr wrote:I like the state by state approach. Yes, they each have a different population, culture, and legal system. One size can not fit all. We are not in a dictatorship. Some seem to want President Trump to be a dictator. I do not and am glad he is not. Health departments are run by state and local governments. I see no need for federal control of them.Judas Maccabeus wrote:If you do not have a national strategy you will be playing COVID wack a mole. But maybe 100,000 lives could have been saved if it was not for Cuomo's nursing home policy at first. Maybe you are right. Maybe riots could be put down easier in Portland and more lives and property saved. Maybe abortion could already be overturned. More lives are lost by abortion then Covid. Maybe we do need Trump as a dictator. Is this what you are saying?

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
We are near 220,000 deaths from the virus.
Daily new cases have now been on the rise for 4 weeks.

Daily new deaths continue to trend very slowly downward, in the 700+ range for the past three weeks.

CDC excess deaths seem to be dropping, and we're nearing the time of year when expected deaths begin to increase toward their usual peak in January, according to the CDC's chart.

What we need is a coherent leadership that believes that science is real, and place’s peoples lives over his political future. Angela Merkel would do just fine, I see Germany’s approach as quite good. With open travel between states, you need to have a coordinated strategy everywhere or it will work no where.Robert wrote:Yes, they each have a different population, culture, and legal system. 100,000 is wild exaggeration, and you know it. Most of your criticism of, indeed most of the criticism I have seen of New York is Monday Morning quarterbacking. The one who goes first makes the most mistakes. I could explain why they did what they did, and in retrospective view it was a really bad idea.
And bringing abortion into a Covid discussion is beyond reprehensible. This has nothing to do with that.
