I don't know the terminology but I'm assuming an LCCH is a license to conceal carry a handgun or something like that. I'd be interested in hearing more about the legitimate reasons for a non-resistant Christian to license and carry a concealed weapon.Josh wrote:You may be revealing your political bias here. My "bias," by the way, comes from the non-resistant teachings of Christ and his apostles. As an Anabaptist brother I would have thought you would have understood that. Frankly, seeing it as a "political bias" may say more about your own political worldview than mine.

I also would be curious on what grounds a non-resistant Christian would ever need concealed carry.Dan Z wrote:I don't know the terminology but I'm assuming an LCCH is a license to conceal carry a handgun or something like that. If I was running a draft board, I would seek to discredit those coming before me in any way possible because the only way the draft would come back is if we were in a serious major war.

I was under the impression that a number of years ago, during one of the annual calls that the Holdemans have with the Selective Service, that topic came up, and that the Selective Service folks stated that they would consider applying for a license to carry a concealed weapon to disqualify someone to be a CO.Josh wrote:I’m serious. Interestingly, I don't think this question has ever been asked of Selective Service.
Although really, all I know about that incident in particular is what I read on the internet.

As an Anabaptist myself I care deeply that some of my brethren may be carrying concealed weapons. If you step back to the index you'll notice that Ernie's poll about "Concealed Weapons among Plain Anabaptists" is in the "Anabaptist Practice and Theology" forum. I care about my faith family.Josh wrote: ...I think you’re under that influence as well). Part of a sign of this influence is even caring that people carry guns. I don’t carry a gun, and my brethren don’t. But if the church down the road from does, well, that’s as much my concern as the fact they don’t wear head coverings.
Frankly, I'm not interested in what weaponry the Baptists down the road from you bring to church...or imposing my theology on their "God-given" Second Amendment rights. And furthermore, I didn't join this thread to get into a political gun-control discussion.

I agree completely. The only reasons for concealed carry are to arm one’s self against people. No one does concealed carry to arm ones’s self against deer, ducks, or coyotes.Dan Z wrote:I'd reject them outright if I sat on a draft board - the Conscientious Objector ice is pretty thin under a Mennonite who chooses to pack concealed heat.Josh wrote:I’m serious. But I don’t think we’ll ever see draft boards again. The time of building mass conscript armies to fight wars with battalions of foot soldiers is long past.
Anabaptist will face new faith challenges in the future. But I don’t think conscription will be one of them. I expect the real cultural challenges over the next generation or two will arise out of the growing urban/rural split in this country. Issues like concealed carry are a symptom of that I suspect.

Honestly the Selective Service is one of the worst and most incompetent agencies in the entire Federal Government. It’s basically a vestigial agency that still only exists because no one has ever bothered to do away with it. It is the place where the very worse and most incompetent political appointees get parked in every administration because it is a nothing job. I know this because Trump’s head of the Selective Service is a guy named Don Benton who was one of the absolute most incompetent and corrupt local politicians we have ever had here in SW Washington. He was a big Trump campaign supporter so they initially put him in the EPA but he was so incompetent and horrible there and alienated so many other more competent Trump Administration people that they parked him over in the Selective Service where he could do no damage. https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2019/ ... kes-up-dc/ken_sylvania wrote:I was under the impression that a number of years ago, during one of the annual calls that the Holdemans have with the Selective Service, that topic came up, and that the Selective Service folks stated that they would consider applying for a license to carry a concealed weapon to disqualify someone to be a CO.Josh wrote:I’m serious. I would never trust anything they ever say. And I wouldn’t rely on them for any sort of advice. If in the remote chance we ever had a new draft it would happen under entirely new laws and they would have to rebuild the entire infrastructure by scratch. It would probably mostly be online in this day and age.

Re: Poll: Concealed Weapons among Plain Anabaptists?
When I inquired further the discussion was only about actually carrying weapons, not about the details of having a permit. Permits are a state level law thing. In Ohio the register of them is secret and only the county sheriff knows - although that sheriff might be sitting on the draft board.ken_sylvania wrote:I was under the impression that a number of years ago, during one of the annual calls that the Holdemans have with the Selective Service, that topic came up, and that the Selective Service folks stated that they would consider applying for a license to carry a concealed weapon to disqualify someone to be a CO.Josh wrote:I’m serious. Ernie wrote:I assume that anyone who carries a concealed weapon to church would use it on people if they felt it was necessary?
Or do some carry for status purposes only?
Are there people who would use a handgun only for firing a warning shot but would not actually use it on a person?
Just trying to think of why Plain people might carry a concealed weapon [to church] if they don't plan to use it on people...
Please enlighten me...Josh wrote:Whilst my church takes a hard stance on this, there are legitimate reasons in Ohio to hold an LCCH that have nothing to do with self defence.
