When the discussion is about politics all day every day, the fruit of the Spirit is not often in evidence.

Re: a challenge
I would prefer MennoNet not be a forum for the above topics.Ken wrote: ↑Sat Jun 15, 2024 9:51 pm It would be possible to have endless political discussion here without mentioning Biden, Trump, conspiracy theorizing, or posting YouTube clips with people making strange faces. For example:
The politics of climate change, reducing carbon use, clean energy, fuel efficiency standards, conversion of coal and gas to electricity via solar, wind, nuclear, etc.
Electrification of the transportation system. EVs, electric trucks and trains, etc.
Farm policy and the subsidization of processed foods and junk foods over healthy eating, unpasteurized foods and so forth.
Health care policy: Obamacare versus Medicare for all, vaccines, parental rights vs. the state versus children’s rights.
Housing policy and why housing is becoming so unaffordable (another new thread that just started)
Education policy: Religion and the public schools, LGBT student rights, censorship, curriculum related to racism, history, science, etc.
Immigration policy and politics
The politics of criminal justice
The urban versus rural political divide
The politics of firearms and gun control, school shootings, etc.
The politics of abortion and other related topics like IVF, contraception, sex education, divorce, sex outside marriage.
The politics of LGBT rights
Environmental protection.
Politics is an endlessly fruitful area of discussion.
Perhaps a specific subforum could be created, opt in only (so new guests and visitors don’t have to see it), and all conversation on such topics that isn’t immediately relative to Anabaptism goes there.

Re: a challenge
Mennonet is a forum of sub forums. Politics is an optional sub forum. Imo, this thread does not belong under 'Other' but rather belongs in 'Politics'.

Re: a challenge
then do your part and do not participate in those topics.
if only a FEW of you stopped posting in politics, the whole entire section would be dramatically decreased.

Re: a challenge
True, it is my opinion and since you said it was a proposal that would not continue beyond one week, I will just leave this thread with an encouragement to the 3 mentioned to flee discussions on politics and you will be more at peace in your heart and soul. I agree with what I think is an Amish approach to distance oneself from politics. That is not to say that they all do just that.

As one who has been on here and MD many years, tis a sobering reminder of the advancing geriatricity of our current active MN population.

i registered on MD in .. Jan or Feb 2010-2011? before iphones, FB was ramping up. i,e., lots of FAMILY desktop computers.
this added a fun factor .. often, it was evident others were reading-contributing, right along with the posting member.
similar to Soloist+Wife. siblings could be ornery, and mom+dad were nearby. sometimes, all+cousins were registered and active.
it made for a special atmosphere.
of course, it was only natural for older teens and 20’s to get too busy with school, work, marriage, children, then, to move on.
as well, FB took a toll. with some inviting members to join them. personally, i didn’t want to expand into FB.
i so hoped the younger sibs would step in. looking forward to it.
that did not happen.
one note:
at least part of the reason younger sibs and friends stayed away was because elders told them to stay away.
this came up on MD.
i respect their views and intentions.
but this prevents “new blood” .. and their input.
it’s sad (to me) knowing MD was originally created and populated by teens+20’s.
it was not a stodgy joyless place.
i haven’t given up.
honestly, it takes so little to effect change on this forum! it can be done. even without formal plan. maybe most likely without plan. example: remember the forum before .. steve-in-kville? no one could have “made him up.”
early on, there were a few posting members who were BUSY young mothers. they had precious little time to contribute.
how i remember those BUSY, LONG days! .. MN doesn’t have the numbers of young women MD had. that changes things.
i had another hope that, one day, when their children no longer needed them SO MUCH, they would wander back to continue where they left off. there were some impressive young CM mothers who had great things to share.
