I think you have a theory that JohnL and MaxPC are the same person. I doubt it.

Regardless, JohnL is with us on the forum now, Max is not. I think we should interact with people who are here and active on the forum.
o.hmm.well. maybe. i think mods would be onto it. Robert would have known. i think.
there’s a resemblance.

Early on, Max had serious resentments/clashes on forum. He seem to get over it with Josh. (it appeared)

There are certain ways to find out things, some of which provide much more confidence than others.

To wit, it is possible that there is a different person from the same geographic region and sharing the same computer / Internet service provider as MaxPC who later came back to the forum with a different name. But it is unlikely.

i see what you’re saying. i see more/remember more (that i don’t want to discuss). i want to/don’t want to.
i fail to see motivation. i see nothing to be gained.

years ago, there was quite a deceitful one, he fooled me somewhat, thankfully, others alerted me right away.

he was deceitful and slippery, IRL and on forum. likeable. clearly, something wrong there. but he was looking for personal gain, whether a forbidden candy bar (when he was living with Hutterites under their rules) .. housing, it appeared, anything he could get .. he seemed to me to generally lack boundaries of any description. he had certain gifts. lacked balance. if i recall, barbara10 knew him IRL, no shortage of people willing to help. not willing to be hoodwinked, so to speak. he kinda scared me. i’m aware i can be fooled. he was unpredictable.

i see no payoff in this case. possibly the game of it? people like games. weird game, imho.
it’s hard to believe MaxPC, self-designated resident forum Catholic, wouldn’t have an obituary.

MPC said he was invited to the forum (to be “the” Catholic source) amongst the ignorant, i guess.
to my knowledge, he never said by whom.

Some people just enjoy making up stuff on the Internet and inventing a unique persona for themselves. It's been a long-standing thing on Internet forums. The most interesting, to me, was "John Titor", a guy who claimed to be a time traveller.

It is indeed quite hard to believe.

It was basically dormant until somebody woke it up by suggesting it be allowed to die. Streisland effect???

Early on, Max had serious resentments/clashes on forum. ....
Max & I (He was then on as PlainCatholic) had a clash, but we kept it private, as I recall. (At least efforts to patch it up were via private message.)

From my point of view, it was a misunderstanding, perhaps due to a poor choice of words on my part. I had made an observation regarding unofficial "Folk Catholic" practices I had seen published promotional literature for, and confirmed with a Brazilian Catholic friend, who also endorsed that particular 'spirtistic' practice. (It was he who gave the literature to me. He was a businessman we had met on the airplane trip from the US, when we were first moving to Brazil. It just happened that he was an executive in a jeans manufacturing plant in the city where we attended Portuguese language school, and we kept in contact for the period of time we lived in that city.)

Anyway, Max took offense to my comment about spiritism in the Catholic church in that region of Brazil, in spite of my effort to describe it as something not officially approved by the larger Catholic church. This was why I used the adjective 'Folk' in my first comment. I don't know if he ever accepted what I was actually saying, but we went on to getting along quite well after that.

A lot of people here are not using their legal name on this forum, including myself. [I think I have, however, give my real name in some comments. When I first registered on MennoDiscuss I chose to use the nickname for the name the Banawa had given me, partly because that was during a time when I was really struggling with my 'loss of identity', as I was then in the process of accepting the almost certain 'fact' we would never live there permanently again, and time has proven that true. I'm saying all of this to say that PlainCatholic Max didn't want to reveal his legal name. I suspected that he was actually a convert to Catholicism, most probably from the Lutherans. I do not remember now why I thought that. But I never expected to be able to find an obituary for him, anymore that someone will be able to find one for me (after I'm dead), by searching for "Neto obituary". (You can actually search on "Ernest Buller obituary", and you will find more than one, even though I'm still here writing this. Search on Ernest W. Buller, and you will find an article about a man in South Africa who was sent to prison for something or another, I forget what. He's probably dead by now as well.]

Max did provide a full name to the moderators back in the MD days when there was a kerfuffle about his identity. There is no googleable obituary corresponding to that name (or variations thereof) and the supposed date of death plus or minus a month or more.

ok. i understand.
not long ago, with Pope Francis, there was a kerfluffle within the C Church about some in Brazil, with how to respond to it.
that might have been about the time you+Max had a disagreement? Max could be quite defensive about the CC, also convinced he knew it all. he wasn’t shy about it.

regarding obituaries, i haven’t looked for his, or others’, but, on forum, they regularly are shared by someone who knows.
a lot is known on forum that is beyond me, i don’t pry, i’m ok with not knowng.

evidently, Robert (?) or someone had a contact with his family, if so, they could have provided it, openly or not.
^^see oj’s post just above.

(from what i’ve observed on forum.) obituaries have been a nonissue. a source for prayers.
not mandatory, not forbidden.

Max “suggested” he was no ordinary Catholic, even while describing himself as plain. That’s a puzzle.

In my view, on this forum, CMs share obituaries, they’re appreciated, thus, the oddness wrt Max’s sudden disappearance.

For a period, he emailed me often, his emails didn’t match his online persona very well.
i encouraged him to “give it time” and to appreciate what he found. he implored me to use the “foe” option.
he possibly had the mentality he was gonna “set the forum straight” .. as some others seem inclined to do.

It reminds me of a nice HOA we lived in, where retired CEOs and managers just kept telling everyone what to do, it’s what they know.

Funny about that HOA, we saw one dominant member after another step up to make some important change they felt was important, only to then move away, or pass away, i.e., they didn’t have to live with their changes. Or pay for them. They existed to direct others. Then others had to live with it. Then others altogether forgot why the rules were made/changed.

Sadly, some of the HOA changes were so drastic, it caused homeowners to sell and move away.
i found that very sad. i noticed zero remorse.

People are funny.

I don't think I ever heard about that.
