I think you’re right in the current climate, but if we were to experience a 911 type attack followed by the intense propaganda you would expect from the current administration I believe a draft would not be out of the question. I also agree with Jazman that conscientious objectors will not likely have as easy a time as they have for the past 75-100 years.
Particularly if the loudest representatives of COs decide to align themselves wholly with whatever the Democratic Party wants.
Or the Republican party.

I've heard the Democrats get very upset over non voters for letting Pres Trump in. I've heard Republicans get very upset over us living peacefully without supporting the military.

Both parties are not friend to the Christian or CO.
Yes. Many Christians have concluded this over the centuries.

Are there no foes for me to face?
Must I not stem the flood?
Is this vile world a friend to grace,
To help me on to God?

Unfortunately, too many Christians believe that this vile world can somehow be a friend to grace.

A wee little man can’t say, I’m sorry. A big man owns his mistakes and apologizes.
A wee little man trusts himself and his own discernment. A big man is humble enough to know that he needs the counsel and input of others.

I suspect if Anabaptist in the future are jailed for conviction it will be at the hands of those who sincerely and proudly lift up the name of Jesus, whether from the right or left.

I’ve also witnessed for years on this forum speculation of things that were felt strongly would happen and never did.
Hopefully these speculations will be no different then past ones that never came to be.
It is almost like people choose to see the worst in others.

There are many legal precedents that have been set that I seriously doubt that will happen any time soon.

I hope not, but I suspect the precedents you have in mind will serve to hasten the persecution from the other side.

There are pretty much no outspoken conscientious objectors who are also conservative. The ones who keep holding demonstrations (like sitting in on public places until they get arrested) are almost universally progressive-aligned.

These kind of accusations against other Christians are made without evidence.

barnhart, are you aware of what the recent (within the last year) developments with the government's relationship to conscientious objectors has been? Perhaps you could tell us what would be important now for a young person to successfully be a CO?

This was true in WWI.

This was true in WWI.
And the American civil war. I have ancestors who sat in Confederate prison, condemned by their Presbyterian and Methodist neighbors for refusing the draft. There was an alarming amount of exchange between the army leadership and church leadership.

But not in the Korean War & Viet Nam, so I hope you’re not worried about nothing.
Let’s not promote ourselves as the persecuted church just yet. I’m sorry your people had to suffer in the past. It all comes down it seems to interpretation, but I don’t think there’s a draft until Jesus has His own army.
