Meanwhile, something's changed in 2021 with vaccines:

Image
One thing that has changed is that we are in the midst of a pandemic and a mass-inoculation campaign.

These numbers would make more sense if they were given relative to the total number of vaccines administered.
I think that's changing the goalposts a bit; and every year, we have a mass-inoculation campaign for the flu shot.

Flu vaccination coverage alone is around half of the population, or around 150 million immunisations; that's roughly the same as the current COVID vaccination campaign. Other vaccinations also happen. TDAP compliance is pretty high, so that's virtually every American immunised with that every 10 years. Likewise, childhood vaccinations are numerous in number and the majority of children get those shots.

That doesn't explain at all the spike in VAERS events, and anti-vaccine people have already existed for a while, so it's not like reporting adverse events is somehow a new thing. Something else is going on.

Israel is experiencing a similar situation with a 25% increase in Cardiac arrests & Heart attacks (16-29).
and a 83.6% increase in Heart attacks (Women 20-29). There is a time based correlation to vaccination rollouts, but it has not yet gone beyond that.

Interesting - looks like the data comes from the VAERS database. According to the CDC "VAERS accepts reports of adverse events and reactions that occur following vaccination. Healthcare providers, vaccine manufacturers, and the public can submit reports to VAERS. While very important in monitoring vaccine safety, VAERS reports alone cannot be used to determine if a vaccine caused or contributed to an adverse event or illness. The reports may contain information that is incomplete, inaccurate, coincidental, or unverifiable. Most reports to VAERS are voluntary, which means they are subject to biases. This creates specific limitations on how the data can be used scientifically. Data from VAERS reports should always be interpreted with these limitations in mind."

Something is definitely going on - but the unverified and open nature of the data makes it difficult to surmise exactly what. From what they claim, I'd put it in the "taken with a grain of salt" category.

So if VAERS can’t be trusted... do you have some other reliable data source for vaccine safety?

Incidentally, Dan, I’ve been telling anti vaccine people for years they should trust VAERS. Should I reverse course and now tell them to take it with a grain of salt?

"slightly" lol
For people older than 75 in particular, vaccine effectiveness against hospitalization experienced the steepest decline, from more than 90% to 80% between June and July.

However, the vaccines still remain highly effective at preventing serious illness, according to the briefing. "COVID-19 vaccines continue to maintain high protection against severe disease, hospitalization, and death," the CDC notes.
There's some classic doublethink.

"For people who need it most, protection against severe illness is dropping like a rock....BUT the vaccines are still highly effective"

It's probably just a matter of time until the numbers do what they have done in Israel. It appears the trend has already started.

These are very challenging times to stay positive.
Seems like anger, frustration, fear, mistrust, broken relationships are everywhere.

But what a golden opportunity to stay hopeful because of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

I'm reminded of how God sustained me through previous stressful times...
In 1985 - the first patient with AIDS arrived at the hospital where I was a nursing assistant, we cared for him as he slowly died. No effective treatment. Many unanswered questions about AIDS virus at that time. Much fear.
In 2001 - the 9/11 terrorist attacks followed by the deaths from anthrax in Oct-Nov of the same year. One of the patient from the DC postal office came to the hospital where I was completing my family medicine residency training. He survived a long ICU stay but was severely disabled after his anthrax infection. I think of him when I care for patients with "long-covid" - they survived severe covid infection, but are now struggling with a new normal of severe disability.

Today, I am praying for myself and for every reader - that Romans 15:13 will be our experience today...

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."
