Oops! I just noticed there's an actual picture of the "Royal Vault" here!
No sculpture on top like the ancient civilizations, though!

Falco, they finished the marker. Here is the most recent photo of her grave.Falco Underhill wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 4:00 pm

Addendum: the inscribed marker is properly named a ledger stone. It slipped my mind when writing the previous. I appreciate the plain and simple appearance of the stone, i.e. there are no carved statues or other decor as was done in the distant past.MaxPC wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 5:48 pmFalco, they finished the marker. No, no room beneath the ledger stone. The caskets are buried with the stone overtop.Falco Underhill wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 9:21 pm
Thanks for that, Max.
Best i can make out she's in an underground room (or "crypt") somewhere beneath that ledger stone. Her casket is probably sitting atop a pedestal, surrounded by flowers and covered by a cloth with royal insignia on it.
My guess is the "plain" design of the coffin on a pedestal is due to England’s switch from Catholicism to Protestantism under King Henry XIII. ("Graven images" a big no-no.) However, I do agree the plain design is all very dignified and fit for royalty!
Nevertheless, the medieval tomb of King John, buried when England was still a Catholic realm, is a sarcophagus a little closer in style to the ancient ones I was wondering about.

Okay, thanks. I guess that's what I get for guessing!MaxPC wrote: ↑Sun Sep 25, 2022 1:36 pm No, no room beneath the ledger stone. The caskets are buried with the stone overtop.
The elaborate tombs continued long after the monarchy became Protestant. Here is the sarcophagus/tomb of Queen Elizabeth I who was a Protestant (and anti-Catholic) queen. As you can see, an effigy of her is on the lid.
Tombs will change according to that which is in vogue. Queen Elizabeth II believed in keeping things simple even though tradition may require more elaborate protocols. Her favorite breakfast was Special K cereal with fruit and a cuppa of Earl Grey. She was thrifty and it is said that attitude was a result of having lived through the blitz of London and the rationing of food, both during and after WWII.

The Queen's tomb is quite elaborate. (I suppose I'm partial to modern "plain.")
Special K went back that far? What? No Fruit Loops?![]()
My wife had a great uncle that grew up during the Great Depression. He took frugality to levels that the younger generation would laugh at.
