Amen ! Jesus came to His own (the Jews) but they did not receive Him as their Saviour. So, to those people who would receive Him He gave the power to become the Sons of God, not through being a Jew or any good deeds they could do but by the Holy Spirit giving them new life. They were born again by the Holy Spirit. As Jesus said to Nicodemus, one needs to see/experience a spiritual birth to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.Josh wrote: ↑Sat Apr 02, 2022 12:33 pm"salvific utility for society" presumes the job of the Christian is to save society, yet Jesus seemed to come to save individuals. He abandoned the society he came to to the Romans, who utterly demolished it in 70 A.D.I feel like it takes mental gymnastics and cognitive flexibility either way and I think I'd rather go all in that actually suffering love is the most powerful force to combat evil and is the most effective lever of salvific utility for society. It is on that premise I think that we look to disciple to that end with regard to state violence etc.
If we are to follow Jesus, then we will be focused on individuals and such a community of Christians ends up forming a parallel "society", but such a society is only "saved" because it is composed of people who are.
I was raised in a Christian home but both my parents were, in my early life, not Christians and my father even mocked professing Christians for their beliefs. But then, my mother first and awhile after that my father were born again. A complete turn around in their lives through an experience that radically changed their lives. And I have seen this occur many times in others through my life. This new life / new beginning sent them on a road of being a Christ follower, a disciple. One can't be a disciple of Christ, as Jesus said, until one is born again / born of the Spirit.
It is concerning to me when I hear what sounds like 'another gospel' that appears to play down the need to be 'born again'. To truly follow Christ we all need a heart transplant that gives us a 'want to' serve Him for giving us such a great gift of salvation and the Holy Spirit to live within.
